Samsung Galaxy S5: can fitness and fingerprint sensors beat Apple?

Featured Replies

With the new Samsung Gear Fit they seem to have grasped the right concept.

Yes it does.. every time samsung seems to beat apple. I made the switch long ago from apple to Samsung, so much more freedom much better.

I love the S5 with its fingerprint sensor and even the heartrate can be useful for people who like to workout like me.

Heartbeat sensor is crap. Same trick can be done in iPhones using flashlight + camera for atleast 3 years (I used it with iPhone 4S when it was new). It is not accurate and $20 usd heartbeat belt + sensor works much better and usable. You can't hold phone straight while you work out without moving your finger. Thats why they have heartbeat sensor belts that works with watch / smartphones via sensor.

In short, heartbeat sensor of Samsung is a gimmick, no real life benefits. There is an app for that in iPhone since 3 years and works same way.

In short an other iphone fanboy that does not know anything about exercise.

Its far more accurate (i did some tests as I do own a normal heartbeat sensor and my gf owns a iphone) as the iphone. Quite close to the real heartbeat sensor i own.

Your remark that it is not useable is stupid.. but I had not expected much from an Apple fanboy. Normally I use it to check resting heart rate and heart rate after heavy sets of lifting. So for fitness its quite use-able.. but not for running and such.

Then prove it or shut up. You can do it by comparing heartbeat sensor of S5, iPhone and Belt together in same photo, capish?

I watched enough review videos and conclusion is same: Gimmick.

You blame me being an Apple fan boy, what are you then Samsung fanboy?

This phone is the i phone killer. Apple crapple is dead.

But I guess some folks on here prefer there overpriced itty bitty I fone 5S.

Too bad. Samsung is the big dog. The phone totally rocks.

Why doesn't someone come out with a smart phone that has a thermometer I'm always wondering what the temperature is.

Ok once the gf is back ill get her iphone and put that my belt and sensor.. my s5 all on my desk and make a picture.

To get them all working at the same time would be impossible, but if need be i can get separate readings.

Galaxy S4 and probably S5, Galaxy Note 3, have a full range of sensors (see screenshot). I'm also sure some other Samsung models have at least some of these sensors and I'm thinking since other big name manufacturers may stuff some of the sensors into their devices.

The screenshot is from app called "Galaxy S4 sensors" but it did work on my Note 3.

I'm now using app called "Climatsens" (paid version because it's great and cheap), that has some nice widgets and shows notifications up top (last 2 screenshots).

s5 does not have a thermometer I believe the s4 had one.

IPhones - the outdated garbage dragging behind the flagship android phones and trying to slow them down through the court battles. If not for the Apple with their court battles, our real smart phones would have been cheaper - those court fees need to come from somewhere.

Rob, you may be right since you ownone, or you may not be aware of it. Check the 2 apps I've mentioned. They make use of all the phone sensors. If they work - great, if not - no big deal no losses.

Yes Rob, you're correct, I did some reading and found out that Barometer and Temperature sensors (as well as FM radio) were removed from S5. Probably has something to do with it being waterproof? Can't have it all! I bet they will be back in the S6 so Samsung can produce the best of the best phones (again).

I will take a picture of my 3 devices to show I own them, and strange.. my results were the same as hers.. Iphone lost and S5 is as accurate as a polar.

You googled and find one article, I dare you to prove it with photos or video.

I never claimed iPhone does it better, they don't advertise something does not work properly.

Remember, polar belt can be mis placed or run dry (without making it wet) which will provide wrong rate.

If you think camera/flashlight from finger will detect heart rate better than something as close as belt next to your heart, you're dreaming.

There is no way S5 is as close to being accurate as polar belt in chest.

It may show close results when your bpm is under 90 but no way it'll accurately work over 110.

I recall apple claimed the ifruit users were not holding their ifruit products properly when there was an issue with iFruit 4 antenna...

So they never claimed that, eh?

Who said anything about better i said it is more accurate as the Iphone and close to the polar. Duh please read what I type or is your iphone screen to small to read (one of the reasons i gave my iphone to my gf)

I know all about polar and heart-rate sensors.. I got one on my rowing machine too. Yes they need to be wet. Usually that happens automatic when you workout.
