Is it still generally true that Thai ATM's will transmit only 4 digits of a password to a bank in another country?

I will soon need to activate a replacement ATM card from a US bank and I recall problems in the past where the bank required a 6+ digit passcode for activation and I could not send it completely from a Thai ATM. They sometimes also require you to set a new 6 digit password at time of activation, also a problem.

The phone validation option was also a problem in the past because the bank required the call to be from a US based phone.

I had to express the card back to the US and have a relative validate it, then express it back to me...expensive and time consuming.

Hoping to find a workaround.

I have a 6 digit pin number with my Singapore Citi ATM card and use it in thailand all the time, never had a problem all these years, for activation not sure as on my last new card I could activate via SMS from my Thai mobile phone

I have several credit cards from Chase. I use my daughter's address in the US as my permanent address although I live in both Japan (during the warm months) and Thailand. I've obviously been unable to call the bank from her telephone when I receive a credit card (she sends it over) but I phone from where I am and provide the bank with answers to various questions to identify myself. They then activate the card for me. Other banks might do the same if you tell them that you are temporarily out of the US and can validate who you are. Good luck.
