Beetlejuice
The way the OP reads; same thing happened to his friend the following day and an insurance claim mentioned, appears to be deliberately written in such a way that makes the whole incident sound as this is made up as an insurance claim scam. Unfortunately it doesn`t give this story much credibility, so who knows?
noddy77
“I was really afraid, especially because one of them had a knife close to my throat. Soi 25 is quite a crowded area with lots of bars and tourists, so needles to say, I was surprised and shocked.” No Bars in 25 as previously stated. But he sounds so positive about being in 25 the whole thing does sound fishy. Especially with the neighbour ending up in a similar fate.

bendejo
Green as green. There is no reason to use a tuk-tuk in Bangkok. Ever. With the exception of the guys who work the market areas, where tuk-tuks are used as trucks, I consider the things in the same class as burglary tools,
siamjimi
best NOT to roam the streets alone no matter what city you vacation to the MIB laughed at you bcoz they just got paid and in their minds they were looking at a fool there is very little goes on in ANY areas the police are not a part of - they know exactly who is scamming and leaching off the public daily and they allow it to exist as long as they get a cut simply one more reason to avoid tuk-tuks simply one more reason for tourists NOT to visit thailand - plan your vacation at another destination - it will be less stress and money to visit another location and void the land of up-side-down frowns
sz1a
To say people shouldn't visit Thailand because this guy got robbed is about as smart as saying don't visit LA because there's gang violence and drive by shootings. If the Dane actually treated this like any other big 13+ million city and not a package tour he would have been better off. Don't come here thinking its a playground. You need to ve vigilant like anywhere else. No matter where you go the dumb/clueless/unlucky will fall prey for the scammers and robbers. That goes for the whole world except maybe Singapore.

rametindallas
I felt compassion for the young Dane, but then at the end came this line The day after, Morten told his American neighbour back in the condominium, where he lives, about the robbery. “And then the exact same thing happened to him the next day. Threatened and robbed at knifepoint by a Tuk-Tuk driver and two accomplices,” he said, adding that the incidents could either be a coincidence or a worrying trend of crimes against foreigners. And right away I was overtaken by a strong stench of buffalo excrement . His story completely fell through when he said a policeman gave him 200 Baht. That's half a day's pay. watcharacters
Sometimes, it just gets exhausting going over all the scams, thefts, robberies, and assaults that are becoming more and more common here. Thai society seems much rougher and desperate than when I first came here a mere five years ago. It's all sort of depressing, actually. You. Can't. Trust. Anybody. (Or Anything) Here. It's a fundamentally dishonest society at just about every level. . Heck no. I say bring them on. They serve an educational purpose.
gk10002000
Coincidentally, in November I did walk by the Asoke BTS at around 330 AM. I was heading to the meeting place for my Visa run pickup. The shop had a gal waiting at a table inside the "Korea town" plaza just down the street. I had spent the night in the Nana hotel and walked down the street. Banzai99
Never take a tuk-tuk anywhere, scum of the earth and twice at least what a cab would cost. You fool, thousands take tuk tuk;s every day with no problem, who are you to judge them ? The likelihood of a Farang making a false claim on his insurance from a bogus incident is much more likely in my experience. watcharacters
"They all pretty much laughed at me, when I told them what had just happened. Surprisingly enough one of them gave me 200 baht, so I could get a taxi home, “ he said." And that's the Royal Thai Police Force for you. What a bunch of lazy scumbags. Yeah but one of them must have had a pretty good night to fork over 200 THB.
