Non-smoking foundation claims ban on sales of cigarettes to minors is ineffective

A ban on sales of cigarettes to people aged under 18 has failed.

Prakit Watheesathokkij (ประกิจ วาทีสาธกกิจ), secretary-general of the Campaign for Non-Smoking Foundation, said no countries in the world could effectively enforce the law banning the under 18s from buying cigarettes because those youngsters would ask older people to buy the cigarettes for them.

Dr. Prakit said that aside from the law, other anti-smoking measures should be implemented, such as a ban on smoking at school, education on the hazard of cigarettes to health, increase of tobacco tax and a ban on cigarettes advertisements.
