Authorities busted illegal Siamese Rosewood lumber plant in Bueng Kan

BUENG KAN, 5 March 2014 (NNT) -- Thai authorities raided a lumber plant in the northeastern province of Bueng Kan to crack down illegal trade of rare Siamese Rosewood.

The operation, which was launched early Wednesday in Si Wilai District, involved a combined force of the Royal Thai Navy's Mekong River Operation Unit and officials from the Royal Forest Department.

They arrested the woman who owned the place and confiscated 188 Siamese Rosewood logs. The woman was charged with setting up a wood processing plant without permission and possessing the protected plant species higher than the limit.

Thailand has intensified the anti-Siamese Rosewood trafficking operation in recent years in an attempt to conserve the almost extinct Siamese Rosewood.

Currently, Thailand is believed to be the world’s only remaining place where Siamese Rosewood can be found. High demands for the rare wood and its high price in neighboring countries have triggered the illegal logging and smuggling of processed Siamese Rosewood.

Nakhon Ratchasima holds fire drills and training to prevent fire in tall buildings

NAKHON RATCHASIMA, 5 March 2014 (NNT) — Nakhon Ratchasima province is holding fire drills and training to prevent fire in tall buildings — preventative measures to prepare for the coming hot season that may cause fire hazards.

Fire fighter officials and 10 firetrucks have conducted a rescue scenario in helping monks that are trapped in a burning university building. Mr. Chayawuth Chantorn, the governor of Nakhon Ratchasima, presided over the launching of the fire drill.

Mr. Chayawuth stated that the purpose of the fire drill is to instill readiness in the event of an actual fire. As more and more tall buildings are being constructed in the province, proper fire drills and training must be taken into account in order for local residents to be prepared and ready, said the governor.

Moreover, due to the increasing heat in the coming hot season, electrical appliances have a tendency to overheat and become fire hazards. The governor therefore reasoned that extra precautions should be taken by conducting fire drills to prepare for such incidents and to educate local residents about what to expect in an actual fire.

Armed Forces assist Bueng Kan villages in building asphalt road

BUENG KAN, 5 March 2014 (NNT) — The Armed Forces Development Command (AFDC) is currently assisting Bueng Kan villagers in renovating an old dirt road to become an asphalt-paved road.

As the old dirt road between Wisit subdistrict and Noan Sombun subdistrict in the province has long been in a deteriorating condition, the AFDC has decided to replace it with an asphalt road for the Bueng Kan residents in order to facilitate more efficient road communication within the province and the transport of agricultural goods to other provinces.

The current dirt road has been commissioned to be turned into a 6 meter wide asphalt road that stretches 3,600 meters. The Deputy Director of the AFDC Office, Area 2, has since ordered to expedite the construction of the road.

In addition to the road construction, the AFDC is also helping local villagers dig ponds to be used as reservoirs during the coming drought season and assist in improving plumbing in villages in the two subdistricts.
