Cheap family car options

With that amount up front, it might be possible to get an interest-free loan on one of several new cars if you have a Thai wife, or presumably alone if you are working here. E.g. Nissan Almera, Mitsubishi Attrage, as well as Toyota (and Honda I think) have so-called "ECO-car" models costing around 500,000B and up. Even down to 400,000 if you remove all options.

Rental will be considerably more to pay per month than the interest free loan in most cases I suspect.

^ A Thai person of any gender willing to guarantee the loan with some land or other property as a deposit will do.

Alternatively you're looking at second hand cars and trucks. As maintenance is mostly affordable that is a valid route to go.

And you won't lose too much money when selling it on.

For example:

"Only can spend about 150,000 upfront at the moment."

With Songkran just around the corner, one of the nicest cars around is the Nissan NV, that I just happen to have up for sale thumbsup.gif Look here: http://classifieds.thaivisa.com/automotives-vehicles/cars/nissan-nv-wing-road-1-ton-pick-up-the-fun-utility-car-265201.html Asking a bit more than you posted but then I am thinking that if you have room to go up a bit for a good sale (happy for both parties) I have room to go down a bit... after you see the high quality of this remarkable vehicle I think you will agree and .... just perhaps we can strike a good agreement.

I have a Mitsubishi. It looks like the Wagon but bit older. It is a seven seater, with lots of room. Low mileage for its age. 1999 model but great as I only use it for shopping or the occasional holiday once a year. Just taxed and insured it. 150k cash. I will send pictures tomorrow if you are interested. Let me know. I'm in Bangkok.

Chiang Mai has a car lot, on the outside of the NE corner of the old city. Tom the manager lived in California for 8 yrs.. His cars and trucks are used, clean with a 30 day guarantee. He will finance with about 40% down, I was there and saw good clean vehicles. Starting about 230,000 B. but nice enough for a 10 year old vehicle, all the vehicles looked clean and have the guarantee. Cell number is 66 082 700 0576 tell him Bruce sent you.

all the secondhand cars being offered on here wouldn't together add up to 150,000 baht /£3000 back in the UK

either buy new or spend the money on taxis...old secondhand cars are just money pits which is fine if they cost £500

but this is Thailand

2010 model http://www.one2car.com/PROTON_SAVVY/C05140494

just over your budget but 2012 http://showroom.one2car.com/carDetail.aspx?car_id=l02130108

another make from Malaysia 2011 http://www.one2car.com/NAZA_FORZA/J03120397

bigger car 2011 http://www.taladrod.com/w20/Search/CarDet40.aspx?cib=1370138

just think a 3 year old car + with ABS and airbags would be better than a 13 + year old with no safety items

You began to answer your own post. Let me finish it for you:

.. but this is Thailand, where maintenance and repair work is several magnitudes more affordable than in the UK. So when an old car in the UK goes even a slightly bit wrong you can be looking at a repair bill much larger than the value of the vehicle. So you says your goodbyes and make a mental note to buy new from now on. HOWEVER, this is indeed Thailand. Where you can have something really major go wrong and you'd be out of pocket only to the equivalent of just 1-3 monthly payments on a new car. Then the thing will be fine again for another two years or so.

But for me I did actually buy new. A Thai built truck. That was 14 years ago and I've had one thing go wrong with it that wasn't just expected maintenance/replacements that are part of scheduled maintenance. (Some electric cable shorted and caused some weird stuff in the running of the engine. It was a 500 Baht repair.)

In the UK they don't even say 'Goodmorning sir, what can we do for you' for 500 Baht. :)

Re- either buy new or

Problem with that is prices appear to be changing here..

New Nissan Almera 1.2 E cost 450,000 baht, a 1 year old is around 290,000 baht, and so is about the same for all the NEW eco Thai models, There is a 4 month old Mitz Attrage LTD TOP model near me 120,000 baht savings, well even a Chevy Sonic LTZ TOP model appears to have lost 150 or more thousand baht in just 1 year.... end of year 2 these cars maybe dropped another 20,000 baht..

If your wanting to save money makes more sense to buy near new then loose very little over the next years..... the days when a 1 year old car and a brand new one were almost the same price have gone if appears.

Depends what you want and what it is used for....... My Pickup is replaced with another brand new one around the 4 years mark, or 400,000 KM, I did have a new car, but changed it early 2008 for a 10 year old Luxury car, so is now 16 years old !! [added another 31,000 KM in 6 years]

Your statement is not valid for anyone who knows their way around cars.

Bought a 2001 car mid - December. One owner from new. 150,000 km. Not a mark, dent, scratch, stain on it.

Needed the fuel gauge replaced. Was in the Nissan dealer for 2 days. Labor cost to remove, replace the fuel tank, Check front and rear brakes, full lube, check all levels. 600 baht.

And I do not drive a cookie cutter car like thousands of other people.

the cheap cost of repairs is not a valid reason why people are asking 150,000 baht for a 20 year old car that has circum navigated the equator half a dozen times

Nowt wrong with asking what people are prepared to pay....

Completely agree, but.. Nissan ever made a non-cookie cutter car? smile.png

(I mean other than the Z/Fairlady series of course, some nice ones there.

Toyota on Mahidol Rd has an entire building devoted to selling used cars. It's more or less opposite the Toyota complex that sells new cars and does repair. They do offer some kind of guarantee. The reason that used car prices have collapsed is the 100000 baht rebate program for 1st time car buyers. Lots of people who couldn't really afford new cars got then under this program thanks to the dealers practice of forgiving buyers their first year payments instead of refunding the interest. When the year was up, lots of cars were repossessed. This situation will eventually disappear and used cars will go back up in price so now is a great time to get a used car.

Those Proton's lose more value than the sinsod for a BG with 3 kids.

160k in Thailand for a 2-3 yr old car. They must be seriously questionable.

Why ? or a good deal 2nd hand ?

is BMW seriously questionable.? you see lots of 320D about a 2-3 year old one has lost 1 - 1.5 million baht !! so same sort of value lose over the same time frame

Top model Honda Brio V new 505,000 baht or a year old one for 340 - 375,000 ?

I saw this car on FB. It's about 11 years old and the cost was around 350,000 new. The asking price on FB is over 215,000 I believe, which you will never get,......and oh, those stripes! sad.png

But good luck anyway.

PS. Don't get me wrong it has a 'peppy' 1.6 engine and nice to drive. I bought one in 2005 for 390,000 cash. But I sold it two years later mainly because it was too low for me, getting out wasn't easy and the little space behind the driver is very cramped, especially if owned by large foreigners.

This is the beauty of the internet.

If you don't want to search for something yourself, you put up that the other pearson is talking nonsense.

They spend half an hour frantically searching for you, making sure to post link after link of what you're interested in. It's quite great really. smile.png

Thanks Ignis. smile.png

Now where's your 1 yr old Almera for 290k baht?

having problems with web sites this morning, but just one site [normally cars more expensive on here]

http://www.one2car.com/NISSAN_ALMERA/C06140231 299,000 baht 2013 model

http://www.one2car.com/NISSAN_ALMERA/C07140134 top model and very little more 2013 model

They are all the same, 270,000 baht for a car with less then 20,000 KM..... 2012 MITSUBISHI, MIRAGE 1.2 GLS Model cost new over 500,000 baht

http://www.taladrod.com/w20/Search/CarDet40.aspx?cib=1364700

just one of many on different car tent websites

Private sales are even cheaper price

As said before the days of 1 - 2 year old cars costing near the same as brand new are gone.. so non Thai main stream cars are hit even more like Proton and others

EDIT; more my size car Honda Accord look-a-like 2008 HYUNDAI SONATA 2.0 GLS SPORT 355.000 baht Honda Accord same year but less options 650,000 baht, to me is a no brainier, yet 99% will buy the Accord.
