The Orion P 3C (Lockheed) can see down through clouds and in the dark with almost camera quality images using SAR radar. Australia has that.

Even if you took the starting point as being just the north coast of Australia? And that is a generous starting point because no one has ever talked about the plane possibly being so far south of Malaysia?

There are many items in an aircraft which can float. Closer inspection of the region (where the 2 objects were sighted) will likely reveal a bunch more items, if it is where the aircraft went down - which now looks likely. There are only a few countries which have submersibles (manned and un-manned) which are capable of going down in such deep water.

Remember when the Russian sub Kirsk went down near the Arctic Circle, off Russian coast? The Russkies, with their mighty naval base nearby, couldn't even get a submersible to the site. It was up to Scandinavians to do it.

It was actually the British and Norwegians. Divers were deployed to open the rescue hatch but it was far too late.

Even if you took the starting point as being just the north coast of Australia? And that is a generous starting point because no one has ever talked about the plane possibly being so far south of Malaysia?

The debris from Japan tsunami is taking years to float across the Pacific

Assuming a generous constant 2 knot current sustained in one direction the debris could not have drifted more than 1000Km. In reality that would not happen. The search box is interesting and indicates that there is some reason to believe the plane went down in that area. We are not being told everything.

Yesterday or the day before it was announced they believed the aircraft based on the pings received by satellites had flown for hours along those north or south satellite arcs. That was why the search effort concentrated on the furtherest areas of the arcs,

They wouldn't have floated. They would have flown. The plane flew for 7 hours after the aircraft transponder was shut off. There were two possible locations based on data the aircraft sent to a satellite, in the South Indian Ocean, or north in to China. This location matches the southern theory.

KUALA LUMPUR: -- Malaysia said on Thursday that two objects spotted in the Indian Ocean gave reason for hope of a resolution to its missing plane crisis, but stressed the need to verify the claim.

"Every lead is a hope," Transport Minister Hishammuddin Hussein told reporters at Kuala Lumpur International Airport, where he is overseeing an international search effort.

"We have been very consistent. We want to verify, we want to corroborate," he said.

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott told parliament that "new and credible information" based on satellite imagery had come to light, and that four long-range surveillance planes were being diverted to look into the find in the southern Indian Ocean.

Hishammuddin said Abbott had called his Malaysian counterpart Najib Razak to discuss the latest development.

"This time I just hope that it is a positive development," Hishammuddin said.

The search has been dogged by previous false leads, including Chinese satellite images of suspected debris published earlier which turned out to be a red herring.

Hishammuddin warned it may take some time before the Australian find could be verified.

"Aircraft and vessels are going there, you know how huge the area is," he said.

They are repurposing satellites, sending aircraft and ships.

You have no concept of the task at hand. This is not the Gulf of Thailand. It is the southern Indian ocean. 2500 km from mainland Australia. Four hours flight time for an Orion. Of which can only stay on station for 2 hours before it needs to make the 4 hour journey back to Australia. There are 4 aircraft being used but on a rotation basis, so as to have 1 aircraft on station at all times. Not 4 aircraft searching at the same time.

Patience is key here.

Watson the debris they spotted is still a very long way from the southernmost point of the southern ark of the search area. you will find there was nothing to get excited about, just because they saw something floating in The Indian Ocean garbage patch

My above post clearly shows the seriousness and logic the Australian, New Zealand Defense and rescue forces are applying to the identification, tracking models, rescue(if ever possible) to the "possible" discovery of wreckage of flight MH370. Read it, process is in order, but haste is obviously a priority as Australian's value human lives as a core value.

Also looks like the search area is close to the 40 degree south parallel, where the froth on your cappuccino usually gets blown away with the wind, so visibility will be difficult for plane spotters unfortunately.

I am praying they find some survivors. Amidst all of this government mismanagment, wouldn't it be a frank miracle to find someone alive.

Lets focus the discussion of this thread on that possibility for a moment. For those amongst you with knowledge of the safety equipment...rafts etc on board a similar plane, and the provisions therein. Is there any chance whatsoever that someone is out there somewhere, still patiently waiting for the circus to find them.
