Is Bangkoks septic system not good enough to handle toilet paper?

Being from a building trade background, where the use of toilets on many sites were a serious health hazard, I, like many colleagues, trained to crap in the morning, thus hopefully being done for the day, and getting a shower afterwards meant no bum scrape necessary. I still grimace when visiting Europe if I need 'to go' and have to wipe any danglers around my A hole.

Bidet's are <deleted> by the way biggrin.png no comparison to the bum gun. In Turkey they actually have a length of tube sticking out where the rear is perched, whereby with a twist of a knob, a spurt of water comes and does the wash job. This is great, unless it's perched a little bit forward then there's a very unpleasant surprise in store!

"Why do some malls have a sign that says do not flush the toilet paper?"

Because the backward Thai think it's better to wash your arse rather than scrape shit all over it with a piece of paper...

Ask a country Thai exactly how they clean their arse out in the field and you may be surprised to find out the answer!

Don't use paper, just spray shit all over the place, including you with one of those filthy bum guns, thenwalk away dripping shitty water all over the place.

And have u ever looked at the bum gun headbah.gif.pagespeed.ce.-cCHYEZ1Lo.gif must be enough germs on there to kill anyone.

However the OP says can the system not cope. my answer is I have no idea BUT the exit hole of the toilets is only about 2 inch diameter yet it goes into a 4 inch pipe. They need to increase the diameter of the exit hole to just under 4 inches then you could shove anything down inc body parts

TP is so gross - I won't go places anymore that don't give you a decent bum gun.

Agree, but how are you drying?

I find in this heat, it soon evaporates or just merges with the normal moisture produced in the hot and sweaty regions of our body. It is never a problem for me. If at home and it bothers u just keep a separate regularly washed hand towel for drying your bum. Or If the bathroom is en suite, just go and sit briefly on the end of the bed before pulling up your shorts! Similarly with drying your hands after washing them in public places. Why? Just shake off the surplus and within a minute or 2 of walking your hands r dry. I have never understood why so much money and so many trees r unnecessarily wasted on paper towels and electricity for hand dryers. U dont need a tropical climate for this either. This works in the UK too. U also never have to worry about cross contamination from dirty hand towels; especially the stupid little Thai hand towels which must become full of bacteria after being used just a couple of times.

What about places that have septic tamks? Using toilet paper fills them up with non-biodegradable material. What do most people do if, say, they put their hand in some faecal matter from perhaps a dog? Do they scrape it off with a bit of paper or do they wash their hand? So, it makes more semse to wash your bum, and if toilet paper is provided use that to dry afterwards. If you don't dry it yourself you soon dry out anyway. Washing is far more hygienic anyway, stops malodour and prevents chafing.

Toilet paper is biodegradable and quickly breaks down into tiny paper particles which act as surface area for the bacteria to digest the sewage and therefore reduce the volume of sludge in the waste tank.

I think that the request to put paper in the bins refers to sanitary towels and any other paper than toilet paper.

No it means TP too. They think we're completely thick (and disgusting) that we don't get that.

During the American coverage of the Olympics they made fun of disposing of toilet paper in the bin. There isn't a bum gun in the US.

Three in my house, dozens of my friends there have put them in as well.

The real answer to the original question:

Because a lump of paper or sanitary napkin can block the the toilet. The P or S trap of the toilet bowel is only about 65mm diameter in Thailand. The sewer pipes are usually 100mm diameter. But there is no way the Thais are going to change the way they have been making toilets for 100 years just because there is a big problem in the design that can be fixed easily.

The ruddy septic system in most malls can't handle bum guns as well. Every time I tried to flush a bum gun, it keeps getting stuck, and its connection to the wall outlet doesn't help much either.

I despair that many Thai toilets in malls, supermarkets, and even some Thai restaurants r now not installing or removing bum guns as their use is much more hygeinic and healthy (Consider the close proximity of certain female orifices, and the importance of which way females should wipe with paper vis a vis STDs and the Thai tendency to get most Western things wrong -like the food!) Im not sure if its that owners think its more cool or modern to just provide toilet paper or assume that cos its Western it must be better. I dont think its anything to do with septic tanks as they cope with bum gun water better than paper. I suspect that owner's shrewdly realise that they can save money as the toilet paper is cheaper than the water use and extra cleaning costs incurred to clean the wet dirty floors where bum guns r used. Another bonus of the bum gun is that at home u can conveniently use them to regularly rinse the toilet and seat after use (or before if necessary) and the floor!

In light of my encountering threads about this topic several times over the years, I understand the reason in Thailand has to do with the small diameter of waste water pipes, but was surprised that in another country they put their toilet paper in a basket (or on the floor in a corner...) for a totally different reason. I know you all were just dying to know that. whistling.gif

Actually one hell of a great light hearted, entertaining and informative topic. Yeah, all at the same time. And, no one taking the piss at each other. In this case, and discussion, even that is relevant. :))

Only insight of my own is that toilet paper is biodegradable. Having stated that, of course you must first then have some sort of waste treatment plant or septic system for it to do much good. Most likely, in most cases, it is not allowed to degrade as it is headed straight for some storm drain and the ocean, as one Op stated.

As for me, I love these conversations as in 2.5 years, I am still struggling with the bum gun. Meaning, while it makes all the sense in the world, is logical, and by all accounts from friends works great. I am like a few other op's. Struggling to come to terms with spraying shit either up my back or down my nuts........ Yeah, I know you pro's are managing fine, I just have not got it down yet. Also, on the flip side, if no paper, while it sure as hell leaves you wet, I can only add, if there is no paper, and you have dumped a load, just what kind of shape are you in with no TP......... Drying is the least of your worries at that point.

I never leave home without it.

Good for your butt as paper leaves many bacteria by using water to clean reduce any infection in your butt, in most Asian countries washing with soap with only left side not right so next time if when to India,Malaysia or Bali don't used your left hand to eat with banana leave. As if 'reserved' to butt cleaning only. it's seem funny topic but it's all true.

Is there something wrong with you ?? . Anyone that has has lived and worked outside of the European Union KNOWS that the sewage pipes are smaller in diameter and cannot carry the waste ( Paper). You use a bucket for solids ( or a Macerator).

Nothing better than a nice arse about your face in Thailand................whistling.gif ..........whistling.gif

...............And all the more reason to use a bum gun!

There is no excuse. There are special toilet papers for septic systems that shouldn't degrade the system at all. While they are not like the 3-ply, baby-soft, super strong normal household toilet paper, they get the job done.

Because the sewage system isn't up to the job. That said, I for one am not prepared to use the bins, albeit plenty of others do. But with all the recent epidemic scares, including H1N1 resurfacing just last week, the Thais nonchalance towards hygiene is unbelievable - especially with many locations, including one that incredibly specialises in medical outlets, lacking not just soap but a soap dispenser.

He sticks his arse up at the hand drier after he gets the cleaning lady to fetch a stool and keep the button pressed in.

In Phuket they dont want you flushing toilet paper because it blocks the storm water drains.

I thought it was only sanitary towels you were not supposed to flush in the pan, apart from the <deleted> of course.
