The stamps are not transferred at Laos the are transferred at the Nong Kai immigration office.

The only stamp they move over is your last entry to Thailand with an annotation about the type of entry you had.

I'm sorry you'll have to forgive me but what's the difference 'Nong Kai' and 'Laos' in terms of this process? And would they transfer an extension of stay as described above?

Have only ever used Sawadee......

But there is another and they use the big double deck 40 seat tour bus http://www.thaivisarunservice.com/visarun-detail.html?vsarun_id=23 they go there everyday anyway, 5 days a week do the Visa Service... No idea as never used, but a long way in a Mini Bus, even with Sawadee and only 9 seat mini bus. Do check as some Mini buses are 15 seats

Ignis. Thanks very much. What has your experience with Sawadee been like? What have you paid for what etc? Also what's their support like, pretty good? I need to get stamps transferred so wondering if they are helpful with things like that too?

Has anyone used the company in the link?

Can only say good things about Sawadee, most times when I have used them, Claudio's wife or relatives are there and all 1st class service.. never had a bad driver to Laos have been 3x with them, or Cambodia been many times...

Stamps transferred ? when I got my new passport Jan 2012 she took me to the Office at the Border, all very simple, cannot remember having to pay anything for this transfer stamp. + you do have lots of time

It is not difficult and have been 3x to Savanekhet by myself, main reason getting to old for long trips in a Mini Bus, VIP Bus is much better + stay 3 days so get over trip and able to see some sights there... but since September last year back on yearly extensions

Vientiane border is busy = about 10 hours on Mini bus + about 2+ hours at border, then to Thai Embassy then breakfast in Hotel, for me 2 hours to get to On Nut.. so leave home about 5 pm so a very long trip and then the next day do the the trip again back to BKK

I posted that link on the Big Bus because you can spent another night or 2 if you want as the service BKK-Vientiane-BKK is every day.. So if I have to ever do another Visa trip maybe will look again at big bus and 2 or 3 nights stay.

Edit: just noticed is that your age 1979 ? if so then there and back so fast is fine, I am 30 years older and no longer in the fast lane, not sure I have ever been in the fast lane as a country bumpkin all my life

Thanks very much for this detailed info. A few people have used Sawadee and have been impressed with their service. I'm not a codger just yet but I'm not 21 anymore so will see how 9 hours in a mini bus goes. Needs must when the devil drives as the saying goes. That's good to hear about the stamps transfer. So the stanps transfer is done at Nong Khai which is Thai immigration is that right?? Which side of the border is it on? First visa run and a little overwhelmed at the various hoops I have to jump through. Just about to go British Embassy to get a letter to say the passport I have is my new passport. Ridiculous!!

Ok thanks. I'm actually on a 30 day extension myself of a tourist visa. Would you happen to know if they would still transfer the stamps for that ?? Have been told it costs 400 baht. Although unsure if that's the officials or Sawadee who charge that.

The stamps will be done at the Thai immigration office in Nong Kai that is is located just before you get to the bridge.where you will clear Thai immigration.

If you arrive on a weekend or outside normal immigration office hours they will do the stamps transfer at the bridge when you clear Thai immigration on departure from the country.

Joe thanks! Can you just confirm that that the stamps transfer also applies to a 30 day extension of stay on a tourist visa?

Yes it does.

All they do is look in your old passport and transcribe your last entry into Thailand that has your the date of entry and permitted to stay stamp into your new passport and then the permit to stay you got from the extension.

Hopefully you already got your new passport or you are in for an adventure I just spent two days last week ironing out a friends new passport from England(What a serious pain in the ass! (I am pretty sure they are using the Thai guide to helpdesk service.) I was expecting them to ask for a DNA sample. The best thing you can do is call the company you are going to take tell them you need a stamp from your old passport to your new passport. They will tell you no problem(Trust us Sawadee has been at this a very long time) they deal with this and much more complex issues on a daily basis. You have to remember you get what you paid for its not a luxury vacation and accommodations are serviceable and the food editable. You are on a single entry visa with a 1900 baht 30 day extension. Remember you leave one day get there the following day. Make that mistake it will cost you 500 baht in overstay. These people really know what they are doing and the less time you spend stressing on it the more enjoyable the trip. I have used Sawadee for 4 visa runs and 6 border crossing. Never had any problems and found them to be very helpful and friendly. You will always find someone bad mouthing the process or questioning their method but pay them no mind they look like idiots when you get your passport back the next day. You also have to remember you get your passport back at the border not the hotel.

there are a lot of incompetent answers and comments.

There are three companies who ran this service, every week, twice.

thaivisaservice, vip van

thaivisarun, vip van

meesuk travel, regular van

No way you can that trip for thb4500 at the moment, unless you are swiss or russian.

trip with hotel around thb2800.-, Laos visa thb1500 and thai visa is thb1000 or thb2000

Who have you used, what did you get and how much did it cost.

How much for a single entry Thai tourist visa including transport & hotel if going to Laos?

Haha yes Rick I feel your pain. It took six weeks for me to get my passport. Six weeks. They love bureaucracy and will always give you the worst case scenario (needlessly I found) just to cover their ar*e. Don't care about food or hotel at all. Just want to get it sorted. Can sleep in a flea pit and eat a sandwich if that's what it takes. Thanks for the tip about the setting off/arriving and overstay. It had crossed my mind as I will probably be sailing close to expiry date. That said I will try and enjoy the trip to Laos. I know I I will enjoy the journey back that's for sure!! :)

just to be clear.. The Rep for the Company has your Passports, [On Nut money and all paperwork is check and done, and he/she states which Mini Bus you are on, each driver has the package of forms and Passports] you get stamped out of Thailand, they then have the Passports again, sorts out the Laos Visa, the Laos Immigration Officer calls out your name and hand you your Passport..

The Rep then has all your Passports again for the Embassy, you maybe called or maybe not, only 1 of my trips did we have to go into a building and the Embassy guy called out each Passport name and a quick look at you and Passport.. You do not have to get a number or go to the Visa Application window... The next time you see your Passport in front of the Laos Immigration waiting area at the border the next day....

yes you leave the Hotel in Mini buses to the border after Lunch, the Rep has already gone to the Embassy earlier and picked up your Passport, at the border your Passport is handed back to you, you yourself get stamped out of Laos, bus across the bridge and you yourself get stamped back into Thailand.

DO take a pen, the driver will hand you on the way the forms for the Laos Visa to fill in, these are handed back to the driver [one time was handed the forms by the Rep at the Thai border].. still need a PEN. hand the forms and your Passport back to the Rep for the next stage Laos Immigration.

Info: Few years ago from border went direct to Hotel only the Rep went to the Embassy..

Having been on this run numerous times and friends who have been on this run numerous times. There is always someone with the first time runner panic. A. They forget they are doing paperwork for 50-100 people of all nationalities and badgering them with questions does not get stuff done easier. B. Don't panic they do indeed get your passport(You get it back at the Thai crossing then hand it back over again for processing in Laos) C. Your room and food is waiting as soon as you hand it your passport to the immigration people.(We always went in the building except for once). Once you get to the hotel you don't have to do anything(except have fun) until the van leaves the hotel on the following day at 12pm-12:20pm and heads to the border. While all your paperwork is being sorted they give you 1 hour to shop in duty free(Laos). Once you are done you meet them back to get your passport(Mob scene getting the passport and getting on the bus across friendship bridge) You re enter Thailand they ask you to wait for them at the 7-11 down the road. Once you van is full they will return to Bkk(same people same van). They are also nice enough to drop you off anywhere along the route coming in from up North. If you are lucky they get there before the last BTS. I would guess they have done this process 10,000(people) times? IT is only confusing the first time. I almost took a trip to Laos when I only needed to hit the border the first time. They were nice enough to sort me out. As well as a pen bring toilet paper for some reason it is a precious commodity at the hotel. Most of my runs have been with people I knew from previous trips they end up being some of the best friends you meet in Thailand. The spectrum of people doing this run is remarkable resort owners(why I live in Kburi),travelers, teachers, models and loads of Filipinos(They are like a religious gang).

Ignis and Big Rick. Thanks so much for your detailed replies. They include the useful and often crucial information (take a pen and toilet paper). The devil is in the detail. I feel a little calmer about the process now. I have been to the British Embassy today, itself a fairly surreal experience..feels like walking into a supermax prison. There got a letter to ask immigration to transfer the stamps from old to new. The lady there advised me to get the stamp transfer done in BKK because she said she had heard of an occasion where someone went to Laos and they said they could not transfer the stamps. From the sounds of things this is a one off occurrence. So I went to Major Hollywood with this advice ringing in my ears. After all I didn't want to sweat and worry all the way to Laos. Major Hollywood was really quiet. I got there at 4.30 p.m. The last time I went it was chaos. I filled in a form and after waiting for about twenty minutes for the lady to transfer the stamps I got both passports back. Cost me nothing. However could have done without spending an entire day trekking across BKK and handing out 100 baht notes for fun. Ah well it's done now :)

The Embassy lady was absolutely correct.

No Thai immigration stamps are ever transferred in Laos !

No, she meant they might not be transferred at Nong Kai immigration (Thai border). She meant that it is better to do it in BKK than take a risk.

Another silly thing, never found Hotels in Laos with just coffee, so if like me drink 7 cups of black coffee every morning take it with you, or you end up with 3 in one as supplied.

also start saving all your 20 and 50 baht notes, you can pay in baht in laos, but if you give a large note you may well get 1,000's of Kip change.

So I'm just back from Lao and decided to share my experience particularly for first timers so they know what to expect. I used Sawasdee Transport and we set off from Tesco. By the way the meeting point is on the right hand side of On Nut near MK Supermarket. Crucial information you need if you are late (ahem). It is behind the sign, you'll see a group of people and vans. Just go to where the people have got lots of passports on the floor. Make sure you have three ID photos and it's always good to have a couple of copies of your passport. The van itself has 9 seats in total so best to book or show up early as I got the last seat. We stopped for 15 minutes at a 7/11 / toilets about an hour into the journey and then about three hours later I think. We arrived at Nong Khai at 5.30 am bleary eyed. Nong Khai again has a 7/11 and toilet facilities. The journey itself was bumpy and I got little sleep. They show a film for the first couple of hours and then after that try and get as comfortable as possible. Take a small travel pillow if you can. Once at Nong Khai we waited for half an hour and filled out Lao visa and Thai visa forms. So take a pen with you. Then at 6 am you line up at Immigration or Overstay if you're over your visa. It's 550 baht per day overstay fine as one guy got stung 5,500 baht for a 10 day overstay. Ouch. So don't overstay unless you can afford it! One criticism of Sawasdee is that the communication isn't that great. They do all the paperwork for you but there was often times when people didn't really know what was going on. Anyway...once through Nong Khai you go to Lao immigration, wait another hour and have a photo taken. Then after that it's off to the Thai embassy to hand in your application. This takes about another hour. Finallyyyyyy......after that it's off to the hotel where you're immediately served with a buffet!! I went straight to bed after this as I was exhausted. I got a room to myself which I was happy with. It was very comfortable air con and a fan and cable channels included MTV, HBO and CNN so no need to endure Thai tv. In fact it was palatial by SE Asia standards. A buffet is served at 17.30 which is decent food, not Michelin starred by any means but not bad. Then it's free time with which to do what you like. The next day they serve breakfast (not sure what time as I stayed in bed) and you check out at 12.30 and head straight to the border. You're given around an hour and a half at the duty free at Nong Khai and then given your passport back. Then you queue up at immigration get stamped back in and head on back to Bangkok. You arrive back about midnight so factor this in as there are no BTS running at this time. Main thing is if you're a first timer to relax!!! Immigration can seem like scary places but really it's just stamping and filling in forms. There is ALOT of waiting around and queuing which you get tired of, fast. But it's all worth it when you're speeding back to Bangkok with a new visa stamp, so enjoy the experience as much as you can. Any questions reply or drop me a message :)
