BANGKOK, March 27 - The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) will hold celebrations for the upcoming Songkran Festival at various locations in the capital despite the prolonged political rallies.

Director-General Pranee Satayaprakob of the BMA Culture, Sports and Tourism Department announced that City Hall is cooperating with varied partners to hold big celebrations at various locations in Bangkok including Khao San Road, where almost 30 groups of "Ram Wong" or Thai folk dance performers nationwide are invited to join the events to entertain the public.

The BMA has also planned to organise an ASEAN Folk Dance Festival next year.

Ms Pranee said that BMA will also kick off big Songkran events on the Silom Road, Bang Kradi areas and other locations and gave assurances that the ongoing political protests in the capital were not worrisome.

However, local authorities have been instructed to step up safety measures and take care of the public and overall traffic during the celebrations.

Meanwhile, those who want to enjoy the water splashing, especially women, are encouraged to dress properly for their own safety, and participants should also avoid drinking alcohol at Songkran venues .

City Hall also advises that using talcum powder and high-pressure water guns is not permitted. The BMA will also deploy additional personnel to closely monitor the festivities.

An official press conference is scheduled on Monday. (MCOT online news)
