Pattaya makes changes to swimming buoy design after injuries

n2buoys1.jpg

Pattaya marine officials have begun altering new buoys demarking swimming areas to discourage people from taking dangerous walks on the pontoons.

Following the recent drowning of a foreign tourist who police suspected of having fallen off one of the flat, red-and-white buoys, workers began separating the buoys with gaps large enough to allow rescue jet skis to enter the area. Deputy Mayor Ronakit Ekasingh said it’s hoped the gaps will remove any temptation for swimmers to walk on the floats.

The wide, red-and-white barriers replaced round orange buoys that marked several locations along Pattaya and Jomtien beaches and have received generally positive reviews from both beach-goers and boat operators. But even before their installation was complete, questions began mounting over the decision to use flat, wide, heavy-duty plastic. Several people were injured while walking on the water fences never intended to be a dock.

The buoys were intended to keep the jet ski jerks out. So now they are planning on gaps between the buoys wide enough for a "rescue" jet ski to pass through

because Thais cant swim ??

Another city hall project to join the ridiculous traffic signals that dont work and would not be obeyed by Thais if they did.

And walking on those buoys was great for stomach muscles.

I think its a good move, will stop people walking on them and they will still be visible enough to avoid for those on jet ski's.

What's the problem and what is your suggestion?

Teach Thais how to swim

Generalizations are always ridiculous. There are many Thai who can swim, many probably better than you.

Do you think other "developed" countries do better ?

Google say that average 1/3 of people can't swim,

and that "37% of U.S. adults can't swim 24 yards, the length of a typical recreation-center pool"

So now there will be gaps big enough for jet ski's to go through, will be fun to watch the kids trying to jump across this gap, breaking arms and legs, as they do it. As long as there is water, people will drown, and as long as there are idiots on jet ski's, they will be trying to get into swimming areas.

Assumptions made by people who do not know what they are talking about is more ridiculous. Its common knowledge most Thais cannot swim, probably 2/3.. And speak for yourself about who can swim better than who. Ive body surfed from Southern Mexico , San Diego ( Boomers) , Laguna, ( Brooks st.) Santa Cruz, to name a few. Also completed San Diego City 40 hr lifeguard training course. By the way do you and whats his name above work for city hall ?

Whoaa, Dude!!! That must have been an epic left-hander!!! Guiness World Record material laugh.png

Puerta Escondito, Mexico is a left. And another body surfer and I rescued some Mexican kid who was way outside in a rip.

So he did not have to wash up on the beach like another one I saw that day.

Boomers is a left at South point in summer with South swell. Its a right in winter at North point with North swell.

Brooks is a left. And by the way that was San Diego City Ocean Lifeguard Training Course.

OK - Thats one way to look at it. Suggestions: Teach Thais how to swim and build pedestrian overpasses.

So you think only non-swimmers can drown and Thais are the only people who cannot swim?

Reading comprehension problems again / balderdash . Where o where did I ever suggest that only non swimmers can drown ? And where did I ever say Thais are the only people who cannot swim.?

Do you have a name for that besides making things up that were never said/implied ? Now back to the facts for a change :. Buoys - no buoys, most Thais cannot swim and even drown in lakes..

Not surprising they drown in lakes. Fresh water provides less boyancy..and thais are not generally very fat. In fresh water a thai will constantly have to exert energy to stay afloat.
