SONGKHLA, April 10 - Seven crew members of a Thai trawler were charged with the coordinated murder of two Indonesian naval personnel on board their boat in the neighbouring country's territorial waters on March 9, Thai police said today.

Royal Thai Police Assistant Commissioner General Jakthip Chaijinda said nine crew members of fishing boat Sor Nattaya 7 were held earlier and initially charged with breaching the Immigration Act.

Songkhla police investigators and Attorney General representatives Individually interrogated the nine men and took them to point the spot on board where each was assigned to work. Seven of them confessed to the charges.

They claimed that they killed the two Indonesians on the orders of the trawler captain whom they identified as Opas Charoenporn, who remains at large.

The Indonesian naval officers reportedly boarded the Thai trawler for an inspection when the incident took place. (MCOT online news)

The Nuremberg defense ("We were just following orders") again! How about if these seven crew members had displayed some decent human behavior and refused the captain's orders? There is more to it than meets the eye. One doesn't kill anyone - let alone foreign government officials - in an ad hoc manner just because "the captain ordered it".

What is the betting that these are all non-Thai people and they will eventually handed over to the Indonesians for trial and almost certain execution. While at the same time, not a single Thai will be ever caught.

This is Thailand... It is how it works here.

Just in the same way, if a Thai was wanted for smuggling 379KG of heroin from France to the UK.... he would not be extradited to France.

I thought it had been confirmed that the crew was Thai?, but more importantly it seems the captain is far more higher up in pecking list and much harder for PC Somchai to find

Actually, in most waters, disobeying the captain would mean certain death on the spot. Similarly, dissent in Nazi Germany also meant a bullet to the head. So yes... It's usually follow orders and be a good soldier, or die.

What do you reckon? Something along the lines of three years in jail each and a 2000 baht fine, reduced to two years as they were obeying the orders of the captain and under Thai law failure to do so could be construed as mutiny blah, blah, blah....... and as they had been so helpful to the police with their enquiries blah, blah, blah, the sentence will be suspended for three years.

Meanwhile the captain has disappeared in a mysterious 'seaslide'.......

I believe that to these fishing trawlers Burmese are just fish bait.

There has been a lot more than Navy personal thrown overboard by them.

You're talking out of your ass. They are on a merchant fishing vessel, not a military ship.

Case and point. Military vessels have a higher standard of accountability in the region and overall.

Merchant and fishing vessels tend to have way more disappearances, instances of slavery:forced labour and overall bad behavior.
