Police probe Trang family abduction claims
The Nation

TRANG: -- Police are investigating claims by a business family based in Trang about two of its members having being abducted by a group of men who said they were anti-narcotics police and demanded a large sum of money and gold ornaments from them.

Trang police chief Pol Maj-General Jeerawat Udomsud said yesterday details about the claims needed to remain confidential, because no official complaint had been lodged against the five men.

A male family member said he and his brother had been abducted on Thursday. They had drugs planted on them by their abductors, who then took Bt5 million and gold weighing 750 grams - before setting one of them free.

The five men, who allegedly claimed they were officers from the police's Narcotics Suppression Bureau, later demanded another Bt1 million from the family.

The second brother has not yet been released.

The rest of the 15-member family is now under police protection while Trang police investigate the matter, Jeerawat said.

Good to see the Police continuing to do a sterling job at bribery, corruption and intimidation. They really need to rename the "group" though to something more suitable such as the Royal Thai Mafia.

"Good to see the Police continuing to do a sterling job at bribery, corruption and intimidation."

What's that supposed to mean, they're investigating as much as they can considering no reports to the police have been made aren't they?

"details about the claims needed to remain confidential, because no official complaint had been lodged against the five men."

This rather implies that the police know the identities of the 5 men, and would therefore know if they are serving police officers, and it might explain why in this case, rather than most others when the accused and the victims names are plastered all over the page with full contact details, they prefer to keep it quiet until "arrangements" have been made, and the "official complaint" will take longer than usual to be lodged...
