BANGKOK, April 14 – The Thai private sector should explore investment potential on products for elderly persons in light of the world turning into an ageing society, according to the Industrial Promotion Department.

Atchaka Sibunruang, department director general, said the United Nations reported that the ageing population in Southeast Asia has reached 627 million – 36.9 million older than 65, representing 5.89 per cent of the regional population.

Thailand itself is moving toward becoming an ageing society, with those above age 65 representing 9.9 per cent of the country’s 66 million population.

The kingdom is projected to become an aged society in 2020 when the elderly population will reach 14.4 per cent. Thailand currently ranks second after Singapore which has the highest elderly population in Southeast Asia.

Ms Atchaka said Thai small- and medium-sized enterprises should focus more on penetrating the market for older people in Thailand and neighbouring countries.

Five major industries vital to older people are processed food such as health food and beverages, and food supplements. The value of processed food in the domestic market is at least Bt100 billion per year.

Other significant industries are furniture such as beds and rubber mattresses, lifestyle products such as organic and anti-ageing cosmetics, medical supplies and equipment such rubber gloves, lenses, canes and wheel chairs, and construction materials such as water faucets, doorknobs and bolts.

The export value for these products is Bt200 billion per year, she said. (MCOT online news)

How about Thai teeth? The majority of Thai aging population has no teeth, dentures, or bridgework. When an ordinary Thai of any age children and teens included has trouble with a tooth, they pull it. Consequently, the majority of Thais grows up losing teeth, a significant health concern. By the time most ordinary Thais, farm people, and poor reach 50, they often have no lowers or uppers. It seems that this is an appalling example of Thais not looking out for their own very well. i hate to see Thai after Thai without teeth.

The Thai denture trade should be a cottage industry. The problem is education. Chewing food and digesting it properly and its ramifications for overall health, digestion, and general healthy feeling are immeasurable. Thai should help their brethren to understand the need for maintaining first, original teeth. Never pull a generally healthy tooth. Teach them to floss and brush with peroxide few times per week. Pay dentists and specialists to work in the industry.

Common Thailand. Don't just talk , puff, and blow smoke at money making product without first evangelizing the basics for Thais which would naturally result in more sales and services sales, and result in better health care for Thais. Do establishment business professional class Thais care about the ordinary Thais with dental issues and no teeth at all? It's a national disgrace actually.

The wording of her speech and/or the translation may be a bit off, but products aimed at specific groups or lifestyles is nothing new in the marketing world.

It is not surprising that some take this article as an opportunity to vent their spleen which seems to contain a certain vitriolic bile.
