NATIONAL FAMILY DAY
Divorce rate up 27 per cent over past decade

The Nation

BANGKOK: -- While many Thai families continue to celebrate Songkran and enjoyed National Family Day yesterday, the Public Health Ministry highlighted the fragile state of some families after revealing the divorce rate had risen 27 per cent over the past nine years.

Public Health Ministry spokeswoman Panpimol Wipulakorn said yesterday the National Statistical Office's 2012 report found 314,338 couples married and 111,377 divorced.

In 2003, 328,356 couples had wed and 80,836 divorced. Panpimol said couples suffered work-related stress while the value of independence made them less tolerant.

She urged couples to compromise, be responsible, gentle and rational with partners when in conflict instead of being too emotional or angry.

The increased divorce rate led to more single-parent families, she said, and urged divorced couples to maintain a parental role to create stability for their kids.

"Children nowadays better understand why couples divorce but they still expect care and participation from both parents," she said.

Tell that to the tens of thousands of men who desert their children and never contact them again!

Hardly surprising when the "mia noi" system is alive and well. Thai women are clearly becoming increasingly intolerant of such arrangements, as well as their role as the main breadwinner in many situations, and with greater independence, do not feel the need to hang on to some worthless guy who takes everything he can out of the marriage whilst contributing little or nothing towards it...!!

Where's the stats to give numbers who ran off with another and never returned to the marriage home, kids forgotten, as they were mostly accidents, unplanned.

Who is taking care of the kids--mama--g/mama girls more active, boys just using them as practice, love rare.

Would like to see how many that have just parted. So many thrown together at a young age. How many times have we heard of the bar girl, sending money back to mother for the kids schooling etc. Very few mention where the father is, if you ask they will say he went off and have new.

Instead of rolling out tripe like: "the value of independence made them less tolerant. She urged couples to compromise, be responsible, gentle and rational with partners when in conflict instead of being too emotional or angry",

she should initiate legislation to garnishee child support from immature and irresponsible thai males who abandon their kids. A vain hope, I know.

27% is the divorce rate regarding registered marriages...
but how many thai (or thai-foreigner) couples "married" by monks and/or relatives are actually registered at the district office?

Posted

some inter racial numbers would be nice and cause of divorce.... when the money dried up (after buying house/car in the mss name) the love ended and the farang was broke and could go back to his country

This has nothing at all to do with Giks.

It is all about the availability of debt.

This recent spike in the disintergration of families is due to the availability of personal debt and its massive uptake in Thai society.

How do you figure, the women are taking off because they got a loan, or the husband got a loan and can't pay it and the women take off, or the guy gets a loan and has money for a mia noi and the women take off, or ..

Money is definitely a parameter, the old provider-caretaker combo won't work anymore if the prices are artificially jacked up by adding money to circulation, meaning both have to start working just to survive, western style. It's the "freedom" fallacy perpetuated by feminists of the west.

Aaagggghhhhh.

Falangs ruining Thailand again. In my day, women stayed at home and cooked while I was busy with the mia Noi.

Why can't falangs with their foreign ideas like divorce just stay out of it. If you don't like it go home.

As the women, emulating the feminist decadence that emanates from

UK & US TV, try & become increasingly venomous, confrontational &

overall unbearable, what bloke in his right mind is gonna put up with them?

They do as any normal man would & should do : dump the cow & move on.

There is an easy way to get the divorce rate down to 0%: abolish the institution of marriage. Humans are not monogamous by nature. If two people happen to want to spend their entire lives together, there is nothing that prevents them from doing that even if they are not married.

Or everyone could follow the example of the nation's best known caretaker and just have a common law marriage. coffee1.gif
