Expire work permit, not cancelled (yet)

Featured Replies

Some advice on the following matter please.

1 month ago Ive quit my teaching job at a Thai school. My employer and I agreed that they would not cancel my work permit and let it expire.

The contract, the work permit and my visa (non immig) all end on the same day (30th of april).

My question would be;

Does my work permit still needs to be cancelled or I can let it expire and leave Thailand on the date of expiration (or few days before)?

If needs to be cancelled, can I do it myself without help from the school (as in a cancellation letter)? Or I should hand in my work permit at the school and let them do it?

My worries would be an overstay fine, which should not be the case cause the work permit has not been cancelled yet.

The intention is to obtain a new tourist visa abroad required for my new teaching job

A work permit has nothing to do with an overstay. Just letting it expire should be enough because you do not have to return it.

An overstay would result if you left the country after your current permit to stay ends.

If you already have a new job teaching you could get another non-b visa instead of a tourist visa. For teaching you do not need the work permit application done first. You would just need the required documents from the new school.

So letting it expire is fine, no need to cancel the work permit before leaving the country?

Even if I would leave the country a few days before the work permit expires?

Dont think the new school can provide me with papers during holiday time that fast, so I presume I should go for a tourist visa

A work permit has nothing to do with leaving or entering the country.

Only visas, permit to stays and extensions of stay from immigration are involved with leaving or entering the country,

Since the work permit and non B visa would end the same day (april 30), I would need leave the country.

My work permit hasnt been cancelled, if it were i read that i would need to leave the country within 24 hrs.

Just wondered If I need the work permit to be cancelled or just let it expire and do nothing.

<script type='text/javascript'>window.mod_pagespeed_start = Number(new Date());</script>

The question has been answered !

Only your extension of stay for teaching (it is not a B visa) you obtained at immigration would effect you leaving. Since it will be expiring shortly after you leave it will not be a problem.

The work permit cancellation technically would cancel your extension of stay because it ends when your job ends.

If your work permit was not expiring before you apply for a new one not cancelling it would cause problems to get a new work permit.

Here's a similar case that bothers me. I don't understand why my wife was fined 1,000 Baht in Cambodia for a visa run because her Non-O visa was not expired as it is attached to my work permit which is about to expire in few days? She was advised to let my work permit cancelled first, before either/both of us can go for a visa run. What's the truth about it?

You both on extensions of stay obtained at immigration not a visa.

The apparently fined her for 2 days overstay. They would not of fined her if her permit to stay was still valid.

If you were together and your extension had been canceled they fined her because hers ended at the same time as yours does.

Her extension was not tied to your work permit it was tied to your extension of stay.

Thanks Ubonjoe.

My wife just exited last Sunday, both our visa expire on May 10, this Saturday... I am about to do the same thing for a visa run, because I just ended the contract with my previous school a week ago, and the new school is not ready to process any immigration and labor papers yet. I'm just making sure that I wouldn't be fined by Aranyapratet immigration when I go out this Friday, May 9.

No problem if you have a valid visa issued by an embassy or consulate.

It you have an extension of stay from immigration it ends when you job ends. The extension needs to canceled and you need to leave the country on that date or apply for 7 day extension

You need to leave the country and get a tourist visa.

my recent visa is non-B visa it shown expire at Oct but my

WP expire today 21th Auguest for recent company but will work until the end of this month without extention and I plan cancel WP on the end of this month so 15th so during 21th Auguest until 15th next month is it mean

i am in overstay here and if apply new WP for New employment shall i need to apply Non-B visa again ? or just use recent Non-B visa and pay fine 500/days ?

They probably would not do the extension after an overstay. It would be best to get a tourist visa or at least an exempt entry and then go out for a new non-b when the work permit application is approved.

ok thank you Ubonjoe

Ubonjoe

Wp already expire so should I need to cancel it or inform immigration concerned ? Or just let it be and travel through boulder Thai embassy ( Lao or Myanmar ) then apply another type visa from there !

My question is if not cancel wp ( expired ) are there any impact for new type visa apply process ?
