Seven dangerous Songkran days claim 322 deaths and 3,225 injuries

Featured Replies

I would like to see how many deaths involved motorcycles. If you plot the motorcycle accident figures over the years it would be a straight line at about 80%. The children will never learn......Sigh

Sorry but I think its really funny.

I always look forward to the numbers and hope 2014 breaks all records.

Suppose you will call me sick but you have a thread quoting numbers. Not everyone will be sad

I'm wondering where 323 for 2013 came from?

The last figures I saw for 2013 was 321.

Tried to avoid Songkran in Thailand by going to Laos, throwing buckets of water at anyone, water guns spraying the eyes, hoses and now throwing little plastic bags filled with dyed water, next year there will be a new trend, freezing the little bags of water then pelting anything in your path, more injuries / deaths i predict.

Lets do some basic math!

322 deaths over 7 days is 46 deaths per day.

46 deaths per day over 365 days is 16,790 deaths per year.

In 2010, the number of road deaths in Thailand for the year was approximately 26,000.

So either Thailand has been very successful over the past 3 years of cutting road fatalities or Songran isn't any more dangerous than any other 7 day period throughout the year...

Your math is correct...

Statistic lays between 70-75 killed/per day

Songkran has 40% less killed then average :-P

Lets have songkran every day ;-)

So.......with 40% less people being killed over the Songkran holidays, it should really be

renamed the seven safety days. As I personally find it hard to believe that a holiday

where everyone is drunk would produce a lower fatality number, I think that there

is some serious jiggering of the accident figures for the holidays. Probably some

face saving going on. :-)
