BANGKOK: -- In a new book, former supermodel Rojjana Phetkanha reflects on her successes and failures

After years of being in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons, former Thai supermodel Rojjana "Yui" Phetkanha is once again wooing the media, this time with her "tell-all" book "Khud Ruang Lub Sub Ruang Jing" ("Real Life Yui Rojjana").

"I'm very excited to see the press again," Yui told reporters at a press conference inside MBK Centre just days after her book's launch at the 42nd National Book Fair and 12th Bangkok International Book Fair.

"Your presence here inspires me to take the next step forward. I'm a case study for the proverb, 'never hit a man when he is down'; I have struggled with failure so many times and at the same time have been fortunate enough to have a lot of chances. Don't give up, sail on!"

The past few months have seen a major turn round for the 37-year-old former model who last September was rescued by police from the streets and taken to a Bangkok psychiatric hospital where she was treated for her long-standing bipolar disorder.

One of her saviours from those dark days is Anusorn Jaruwattananukool, the managing director of Anusorn Organiser, APK Artist Management and APK Publishing.

"I was given a second chance after everything went wrong with my life and I think Yui deserves one too," he told the crowd. "I've helped her find a job instructing a new crop of young generation models and in publishing this book, which is a honest autobiography covering both the highs and the lows."

With the Thai penchant for soap operas, it comes as no surprise that the 130-page pocketbook, which is richly illustrated with photographs, is already on the best-selling list.

The book recounts briefly Yui's childhood in Ubon Ratchathani where she was raised by her grandparents before winning Thailand's Elite Super Model competition in 1994 soon after she turned 18. With support and help from Thai-British model and actress Tarini "Fiona" Graham, Yui quickly rose through the ranks and was soon gracing catwalks alongside Kate Moss, Elle McPherson and Naomi Campbell. Chosen as the face of Chanel's Allure fragrance, Yui also modelled for Christian Dior and Raph Lauren.

"Yui had great natural beauty," recalls Graham. "It wasn't easy for such a world-famous perfume brand like Chanel to take on a model from Asia as a presenter."

With the Storm Model Agency, Yui earned from US$20,000 to $200,000 per event and was much in demand for the haute couture shows in London, New York, Milan and Paris.

But with fame and fortune came parties and drugs - uppers, mainly cocaine, to stay awake for long photo shoots and downers to get to sleep.

She eventually returned to Thailand, broke, in 2004.

Yui was subsequently diagnosed with bipolar disorder and for at least five years underwent therapy at various psychiatric hospitals, including a drug-and-alcohol rehabilitation facility in Chiang Mai.

"I met her after she was discharged from Somdet Chaopraya Institute of Psychiatry though she was still on medication. She looked normal but tended to be slow on the uptake. When she started working and forgot to take the pill, I saw her opposite sides - extremely glad and extremely sad, both of which are clear signs of bipolar disorder," says Anusorn.

"Sometimes she insisted on being alone. At others, she would want to drink. Often she slept round the clock and missed her appointments. She said that she didn't want to go out on a job. But all of these could be resolved by taking her medications.

"I lost everything when I took drugs," Yui confirms. "It affected my work; I was late a lot and didn't do a good job. I became another person.

"Now, I am better and can work again. I'd love to do an advertising campaign or a fashion shoot."

The book also covers her personal heartbreaks, like the male model she adored only to discover he was gay. She recalls actor Leonardo DiCaprio throwing a bucket of ice over her head after she warned a model friend about him and, perhaps more importantly, she also writes about her child.

"A lot of people asked me about my child while I was undergoing rehab so I decided to tell the truth in my book. My daughter is now 12 and while I miss her terribly, I don't want to hide away from the facts anymore.

"Her father and I are no longer in contact though I do know he has remarried. I would love to know how my daughter is doing," he says.

Today Yui earns a modest income training fashion models and in her leisure time reads monk W Vajiramedhi's dharma books.

"I tell my young charges not to believe what other people tell them and to stay far away from drugs," she says.

Sad tale she won't be the last though. The fashion 'industry' is one of the most demanding and cut throat around. Models seem to have to bear a lot of that burden hence they're all utter nut jobs once they're past their best. Sad tale with a happy ending. I hope she warns these 'aspiring youngsters' she is helping that they'll probably wind up down some Sukhumwit sub soi caked in their own pooh, talking to invisible men....

There are agencies in Bangkok that can find her daughter if she is serious.

If she's going to do this - why be dishonest about her reasons for doing drugs?

That paragraph says it all. A book of photoes with some captions. Still good luck to her if it gets her back on track with her life.

On another note what does a book full of pictures have to do with soap operas? Admitadly I can see a soapie/movie based on her life coming out of all this, but still......

Her life story in a 130 page paperback that is mostly pictures?

Since Thais are the one of the busiest readers in the world, a 130 page book should take them only a day to read. Even less if there are a lot of pictures.

      A 63-year-old woman, Khunlin Jokklad, urgently reported to police on September 28, that her 70-year-old sister, Amphon Jokklad, has been abducted from a local hospital in Pathum Thani, by a mysterious man. The incident occurred on the evening of September 27, prompting her to file a complaint at the Pratunam Chulalongkorn Police Station. According to Khunlin, she brought her sister to the Pathumthani Hospital on September 23 for treatment of food aspiration and paralysis, along with memory issues. On September 27, hospital staff informed her that Amphon was ready to be discharged. Due to her own struggles with depression and age-related limitations, Khunlin requested that her sister's three children come to take her home. However, when Khunlin visited the hospital the following morning with care packages for Amphon, she discovered that her sister had already been taken away by someone claiming to be her son. Alarmed, Khunlin contacted her sister’s relatives and learned that no one had come to pick her up. Upon reviewing the hospital's surveillance footage, it was revealed that a man, who did not resemble any family member, had taken Amphon in a taxi, raising concerns for her safety. The footage shows a man with dark skin and a shaved head lifting Amphon into a taxi before driving away. Khunlin expressed her disbelief that hospital staff would allow her sister to leave with someone who was not family, considering she had been the one to bring Amphon in for care. “I’m extremely worried. My sister is elderly and has multiple health issues. I urge the authorities to help bring her back,” Khunlin pleaded. In response, Pol. Lt. Col. Wichaya Phankham, head of the police station’s investigation unit, has initiated an inquiry and is coordinating with the hospital to review the footage and locate the taxi driver who picked up Amphon. In a moment of despair, she attempted to end her life but was saved in time by the officers’ quick response. Pol. Lt. Gen. Prachuap praised the two officers for embodying the principles of the Royal Thai Police, stating, "Their rapid response and dedication to saving this woman's life is a shining example of what it means to be a protector of peace."       One needs to look at why men end their marriages and IMO it's because the women stop having sex. IMO men don't have affairs because the new woman is better, but because the new woman actually has sex. I'd never have left my first partner if she hadn't turned our relationship into a no sex zone. More fool her. The next guy ( it was a miracle, but her sex drive returned when she needed to trap another man ) lasted even less time than I when she tried the same BS on him.

      Police Lieutenant Rewat Abdin, Deputy Inspector of Bang Nam Priao Police Station, responded to an incident on September 27, involving the death of a woman due to carbon monoxide poisoning inside a vehicle. The woman, identified as 38-year-old Ms. Phaknan Bamrungphuet from Prachinburi, was discovered unconscious in her Ford Ranger parked along a road near Wat Bang Sai in Chachoengsao. Despite efforts to resuscitate her, she passed away after being rushed to Bang Nam Priao Hospital. The scene revealed the woman’s pickup truck parked by the roadside with a charcoal stove found overturned beside it. People pulled her body from the vehicle and attempted CPR before taking her to the hospital. Her safety shoes were also found nearby. A local resident, Mr. Kit Phokin, 46, a former village headman, was the first to attempt CPR. He stated that he had noticed the truck parked with its window rolled down earlier in the afternoon and assumed the driver was making a phone call. When he returned in the evening, the vehicle was still there. A local resident alerted him that someone was unconscious in the car. He immediately assisted in pulling Ms. Phaknan from the vehicle but noted that she showed no signs of life. According to initial police investigations, Ms. Phaknan had left Prachinburi earlier that day and contacted her relatives before sharing her location. By the time they arrived, however, it was too late. Investigators suspect that her death was linked to a dispute with her partner, though other potential factors, such as financial or health issues, have not been ruled out. Authorities will conduct further inquiries with her family to clarify the circumstances surrounding her tragic death.
