Strong 6.6 earthquake strikes off Canada's Vancouver island: USGS

WASHINGTON - An earthquake measuring 6.6 struck late Wednesday off Canada's Vancouver island in the Pacific, the US Geological Survey said.

There were no initial reports of casualties or damage.

The quake, which hit at 0310 GMT, was at a depth of 11.4k m (7.1 miles) and 94 km (58 miles) south of Port Hardy, Canada.

The US agency had initially reported a magnitude of 6.7.

The US tsunami warning office in Palmer, Alaska said there was no tsunami danger for potentially affected areas: Alaska, British Columbia, Washington, Oregon and California.

Port Hardy Mayor Bev Parnham said no one in the town was injured but she said "pretty much everyone felt it -- it was quite a shake."

"Our infrastructure is in place and there’s no damage that we’ve been able to see," she said, according to The Vancouver Sun.

There is (supposedly) a "major" earthquake in that area about every 500 years on average and the last "megathrust" quake was over 300 years ago as best as they can tell. (Major as in "catastrophic, landscape changing".)

One estimate is that there could be a major (9+) quake in that area anywhere from now to within the next 700 years, and that such a quake could produce tsunami waves of 80-100' high.

Maybe as scary as that could be, is the fact that in the Puget Sound region there are possibly (probably ?) dozens of nuclear reactors (mainly in the US Navy ships/submarines) and weapons.

The next 700 years? Better consult with the Thai meteorology department. They know how to predict quakes precisely and even have a quake warning system.
