What is in khao chae (summer rice)?

Featured Replies

I had it today for the first time, I was alone and I don't know half of the accompanying foods.

The ones I figured out:

Deep fried green pepper stuffed with mince pork.

Sticky, sweet, shredded pork lumps.

Deep fried stuffed shallot.

The ones I need help with:

Dried, hard chips, glazed in sugar. Could be vegetable or fish.

Some kind of sweet noodle, it could have been a vegetable? It was glazed in something very sweet.

An orange lump. I didn't dare try this one. Looked like a big dried apricot.

NASTY black balls. Tasted of fish/tamarind. These were gross. A pasty texture.

Anyone know what the above are? It was nice, although a bit confusing about how to eat. I wasn't sure if the vegetable in the middle could be eaten or were just for decoration...

The "sweet noodle" could have been sweet pickled turnip.

The black balls were luuk kapi - balls of shrimp paste (plus a few other ingredients) made more evil by being heated in a wok.
