Thai Airways staff members warmly greet anti-government People

BANGKOK: -- Shift from Lumpini Park likely soon, source says; govt warns of arrests

Anti-government protesters will move from Lumpini Park back to the Democracy Monument to make a final push for an appointed prime minister and reform, a source said yesterday.

"We maintain the same stance to oppose the election until there is reform. We will disrupt the poll again whenever it is held," the source said.

Anti-government protesters, led by Suthep Thaugsuban of the People's Democratic Reform Committee, yesterday marched from Lumpini Park to Thai Airways' headquarters at Vibhavadi Road, where they received a warm welcome from most of the national flag carrier's staff.

The airline's acting director Chockchai Panyayong, other THAI executives and the carrier's labour union chief Damrong Waikani greeted Suthep and the other protesters upon their arrival and gave them black T-shirts and purple scarves as gifts.

A lot of staff donated money and gave them roses to support the movement.

Suthep asked staff to join the movement to oust Yingluck Shinawatra's government.

"I'm sad to know that Thai Airways has had a low performance over past years due to political intervention in management," he said.

Jamsri Sukchotrat, an adviser to the labour union, said the airline would support the anti-government movement so as to have "good politicians" ruling the country.

"We will continue our opposition to the privatisation [of the airline]," she said. "I believe if we have good politicians to run the country, the state-run airline would be healthy."

Over the past week, Suthep visited many state enterprises calling for support.

He said earlier he would announce a new plan for a big rally next Wednesday.

Labour Minister Chalerm Yoobamrung, who heads the government's Centre for the Administration of Peace and Order (CAPO), said yesterday that he would soon order a "round-up" to arrest leaders of the anti-government who created trouble.

The move follows a spat of violence including a bomb blast on Thursday at the head office of the Daily News newspaper.

"I will make the final decision soon to arrest trouble-makers," he said. "If anything happens after the round-up, let it happen," he said.

The public prosecutor recently finished compiling cases against anti-government protesters and is prepared to prosecute 80 people for causing trouble, according Sirima Sunawin of the CAPO.

Chalerm hasn't got a snowball's chance in hell of carrying out has threats.

Heard it all before.

As for his comment "If anything happens after the round-up, let it happen,"

I don't think he understands that he is already being lined up on murder charges along with Tarit and Yingers because of that attitude.

It won't happen anyway.... Suthep alone has 2,500 guards... Chalerm's keystone cops are no match.

The guy is an unparallelled joke.

Another final push.

Please return the park as you found and just go and present your self to the police.

Meanwhile abhisit is slowly letting go of your apron strings and at least trying to move forward instead of polarizing a nation!

To be fair, in general the PDRC and the Democrat party mass demonstrations were usually followed by a cleanup day. Same in the past with PAD. Hope they'll do the same with Lumpini Park, although will probably take some time to restore things to normal there.

As draftvader mentioned, Phan Fa stayed blocked pretty much all this time (different group, though), so this could actually be an improvement on the traffic situation.

Even police spokesmen are distancing themselves from Chalerm's idiotic assertion that the PDRC would target a highly Democratic-leaning publication, any more than with the attack against the Administration Court ( which Chalerm naturally doesn't mention ), and anymore than the previous attacks against the Criminal Court, the independent agencies, Abhisit's home, Sukhumbhand's home, the Democratic party's headquarters, Dr. Narong's home, or any of the homes of PDRC leaders, including Suthep's ( three times ). The narrative is clear to everyone - even to Chalerm privately - both in and out of sobriety. What's also clear is that Suthep and the movement enjoy wide popularity, and the embrace from Thai Air employees is but the latest example. You can't fake these optics. Companies and agencies that greet the movement in open arms is becoming a daily phenomenon. As are Chalerm's daily rants, which he seems to think paints an appealing alternate universe.

You can't fake these optics? this is Thailand the hub of fakes.wai2.gifwai2.gif

It will be nice to see Lumpini vacated. As much as they may clean up the park, it will take a considerable amount of time and money to restore the flora and infrastructure and to allow Bangkok residents the use of this scarce facility in this concrete jungle. Perhaps city planners (is there such a thing here?) might consider the construction of a purpose built "demonstration park" for the future, to be used by any side in the inevitable discord that will dog this country in the coming years and decades. That, along with proper registration of demonstrations, to minimise the inconvenience caused to Bangkokians going about their normal everyday lives and business. Oh, who am I kidding?!

Yes, the way they ruthlessly sit around in demonstrations, or ruthlessly walk to meet people like the Thai airways staff and management, or being damned inconvenient and extremely ruthless in getting in the way of bullets and grenades...damn, these people are ruthless...

I see the Suthep farangs are still posting their crap.

all hail the begging clown with the whistle.

whistle (kee-nok) bird shit?

Another of your cutting edge intellectually heavy contributions.

Ever wonder why so many ordinary employees in so many varied organizations want rid of the Thaksin regime?

No, I don't suppose you have.

Why dont they move and stage their protest in Chiangmai. That will rattle the Shin family. Time to give the Chiangmakians a taste of what the Bangkokians have suffered for 6 months.

Because there are too many idiotic shootings and grenade attacks already. If the PDRC were in Chiang Mai how many grenade attacks would they have to suffer each day ?! Nobody is that stupid, not even Yingluck ?!

Any why do Thai Airlines employees and unions fear privatization of the airline? As long as the government subsidizes the airline the employees can maintain their benefits. As long as the airline has the government to take care of the losses nothing will change. No doubt the airline suffers because of government involvement but that is not necessarily the doing of the current government. The problems go way back. Privatization and/or tough management changes would ruin the gravy train that exists in Thai Airways.
