Grass lawn on top of flat concrete roof

Featured Replies

Hello,

Anyone have knowledge and can give pointers to companies that lay a grass lawn ontop of a glat concrete roof, the way to do, whats involved etc.

building on a sloping land, have the garage at ground level and ontop of the garage to have a 17m x 8m lawn for use by the kids to play on etc.

Thanks in advance for advice.

Regards

Arran.

Normal design load for a non-accessed concrete flat roof is 150 kg/sqm.

A grass lawn with 10cm thick planting soil would impose a load close to this design load with no margin for human load.

+1 on trogers comment, if this is a new build you need to design the roof to support the lawn over and above what it would be stressed for as an accessible roof.

Don't forget all the trees etc in containers that are bound to end up on the roof too.

Talk to your architect, he should also know what to build in for drainage etc.

"I don't want to know why you can't. I want to know how you can!"

Not to mention the huge extra weight when it rains, and the water gets absorbed by the soil.

thank you.

You can use artificial grass?

No need for the soil and water weight. But last time I looked it seemed cheap, until I multiplied up by the number of square metres needed.

Sorry I forget the price.
