Chompuu

Can anyone tell me the correct scientific names and English names for the Chompuu family?

It seems to be very confusing and there are many conflicts regarding this.

I have attached a chart of what I have found so far, but I am not sure what ones are correct.

If you look at the Thai Wikipedia page you'll see that chompuu covers many more species than you've listed.

Keeping things simple, the Thai fruit's common English name is Rose Apple, sometimes qualified with "Green" or "Red". The species is Syzygium samarangense.

I can't be 100% certain, but I think I've also seen Syzygium jambos in the market. Its common English name is Malabar Plum.

I was wondering who would tackle this subject.

Yes, there are many species of Chompuu. I have tried to narrow it down to a few and after a few more hours research, I think that I have got it more or less set up. I wanted to simplify it and also include the most common names. I will mark ROSE APPLE as the most common description.

All I need now is the Thai script for:

CHOMPUU PA (OR PAA) - S. aqueum (water apple)

CHOMPUU TUP TIM JAN - S. samarangense, myrtaceae (java apple)

I know that TUP TIM means pomegranate, so I can put the script for CHOMPUU TUP TIM together, but I don't know how to write JAN.

make sure you dont miss the tone marks above the letters

Paa in this context means "forest". You can see the spelling at http://www.qsbg.org/database/botanic_book%20full%20option/search_detail.asp?botanic_id=1536 It's in the first row of the table on the right. That page, however, suggests it's a different species.

Thanks Wacoal for your information. As I advised AyG, I have narrowed my list down to a few species.

Regarding your information:

1. I will list ROSE APPLE as the most common term for Chompuu.

2. I think I will leave this as it would cause too much confusion with the current list.

3. I will indicate LUUK CHOMPUU as chompuu fruit (otherwise there would be too many inclusions).

Regarding the tones, at the moment I am writing this in simple Thai for non-speaking readers. I have had a lengthy discussion on this, under the heading K and G in Thai.

I use the Thai-language.com dictionary often, but thank you for that.
