just another normal day in the LOS ... what a pitty ...with some real will in changing things , many accidents could be avoided. I am afraid that will never change ..... 21 years in Thailand and still the same amount of dead on roads ...and no improvement so far .

Thainess. I have a Thai friend who argues that his amulet will protect him on the road 100%. He wears no helmet, rides up and down the sidewalks and zips around like a banshee out of hell.

That belief that the amulet will protect their lives, no matter how reckless and/or irresponsible they are, may be the root of many of such accidents. It is tantamount to refusing to accept personal responsibility for their actions.

In my neighborhood there is a gargantuan woman that rides her scooter the 200 meters from her dwelling to the local Tesco with a toddler standing behind the handle bars and another child holding onto the back without helmets or restraints of any type. She rides like a lunatic not even slowing down at the speed bumps. But she proudly wears a garland of amulets dangling from her water-hydrant-like neck. TIT

How many times do you ever see the highway patrol cars parked in their police stations? How many times have you ever seen them on the road's catching violators?

II just drove mototrcycle to Amnat the other day... and I had to think this... in the city, there are several check points for helmet violators...

then went on the buzzing, drive as fast as you can or anywhere you want to highways... and most people driving on the sides(or aka Motorcycle lane) without helmets...

Now wondering... in a city, there is less likely to be an accident because the flow of traffic is controlled by itself...maybe a drunk might cause an accident, but far and few between... and yet we read as in this case...most accidents are happening on the highways and expressways... so why are all those policemen checking in town where it is not for safety... and not being where safety is needed... of course we might have a united opinion on this... but in reality... we see these articles constantly and yet the solution is not being presented... (yet we pray for Korea)

According to Ch3 news just now the death toll is now 15.

Witness said the truck was overtaking another vehicle at high speed and careered into a ford ranger pick up before hitting the passenger bus and pushing it off the road.

I would have to disagree that the roads are the problem,certainly not the world's deadliest,having driven most areas in Thailand, I would asses that the driving habits of the locals are the problem,which is why accidents are common. I find the roads generally good here but the correct use of the roads is little understood or controlled.

Oh they take speeding very seriously, recently they installed fixed speed cameras in Phuket, now we know the open road limit is 90, otherwise 80, unless sign posted, well along one main rd, mostly built up areas, where in Oz the speed would be 60 guess what they set the camera trigger speed at....120kph.... absolutely stupid.

YES. Got a cousin-in-law who is Senior Sergeant Major with RTP and I asked him about that once. They ONLY count the ones who died at the scene. If you die on the way to the hospital, or in the hospital, your death isn't counted as one of the "dead" from the crash.

Tak Road Witnesses Yet Another Tragic Accident

TAK - A hilly slope of the highway in Mueang district of Tak province has claimed yet another traffic accident in which 15 people were killed.

It is the third large-scale road accident that happened on the very same stretch of Tak-Mae Sot Road in the past 5 weeks.

In the latest accident, a 10-wheeler truck has collided into an oncoming converted pick-up truck that was full of passengers at around noon today, police said.

According to the police, the driver of the truck lost control of his vehicle as he descended down the slope of the hill. The truck reportedly crashed into several vehicles, before slammed headlong into the pick-up truck. Nevertheless, the police stress that a thorough investigation is needed to establish a clear cause of the accident.

13 people died at the scene, while two more victims died at hospital, medical workers say, adding that the dead include an official from the Department of Forestry, and the pick-up truck's driver, while the rest was members of the local hill tribes.

The pick-up truck was headed to Mae Lamao district and left the bus station in the city center of Tak province only 40 minutes before the accident, police say.

Suriya Prasatbandit, Govenor of Tak province, said during his inspection at the accident site that he has ordered an investigation into the case, and that he demanded to see the result of the inquiry as soon as possible.

The same downhill slope of Tak-Mae Sot Road is no stranger to accidents. On 24 March, a public bus carrying officials on a field trip sped down into the ravine next to the highway, killing 31 people.

In another incident on 23 April, 16 illegal immigrants were killed when their chartered bus suffered a brake fault and crashed into the side of the road.

This is because the majority of the folk, who actually run the country, never went past the 6th grade. It is going to take a couple of generations after the education system here is brought to western standards. In other words, none of us here on TV will ever see it.
