Bulldog With Breathing Problems

Recommended Posts

My British Bulldog is 2 1/2 years old and weighs about 30 kilo's.

Over the last couple of months I have noticed that a lot of the time he makes a nasty grunting/snorting sound when he breathes.

Yesterday I took him for a walk around the lake that is near me .I admit it was very hot so it prolly wasn't the best time to walk him

He seemed to have trouble breathing for hours yesterday ,during and after the walk.

Is this normal or is there something I can do about it ?

Thanks :o

kurgen, bulldogs are soft pallet breeds; heat is awful for them, and every extra kilo is also problematic... BUT u might want to check out if he has a cold/respiratory infection, and some dogs beleive it or not, have asthma!!!! i dont know if 30 kilo is too much since my large boxer was 30 !!so that seems way too much, but it depends on his size etc....

try shorter walks in cooler times

does he have nasal discharge? etc....

also, get his heart checked if possible, dont know if vets in thailand can do that, its fairly new here in israel also (cardiology for dogs) ...

also, try to google: soft pallet breeds, i cant remember but something about 'prolapse' (the pallet in the back of the mouth closes, sort of like tonsillitis in people, causing sleep apnea, snoring etc... in the dog)... try to google also: bulldogs + snoring or combinations etc... there's a lot about these problems in the serious dog breeder websites.

Bulldogs are bred with a congenitally enhanced defect....their snouts have been bred shorter and shorter over the years purely for appearance; the result is a breed that almost universally suffers from breathing difficulties. Look at illustrations of these dogs in the 19th century and you'll see their noses are much longer.

I can only assume that the poor animal is totally unsuited to life in this climate especially with so much dust and potential resperatory infection about.

The English Bulldog breed has so many defects, that in Holland there is even a veterinary specialist in solely this breed :o

hi everyone.. i know this isn't the right reply you expected.. but I've been searching for thailand bulldog puppies for 2 weeks and can't find the right one. I've emailed some of the sellers in bulldogthailand.com, in yello.com and thaibulldog.com but have got no replies.. perhaps because I'm using english language? I really love bulldogs and one of my friend like them too, I wish to buy some puppies and import them from thailand. I'm in Medan, Indonesia. It'd be really great if anyone could help me with this including shipping, (I'd like to know about terms of payment as well because this is my first transaction online buying puppies) I'll be posting a new thread as well. thanks.

Winarto.

Kurgen,

I seldom have probs walking my 3 year old Bulldog, but I never take him out when its very hot weather. If I take him a long way from home in the car, I always make sure I have a bag of ice for when he gets too hot.If your dog is panting excessively and rasping,he really needs to be cooled down quickly.Ice or a cool shower will do that.Heat stroke is a killer in dogs and Bulldogs are at hi-risk in Thailand.

better not.For dogs, they have the sebaceous gland only at their foot pads. when dogs stay in hot weather, thay can't stand with it ..and get "heat stoke "

Hi, krogen, I don't know, if you are intrested in, but in naklua is a very good vet. We have been there for several times, when we stay in jomtien. We've been the for more than ten times. If you want to know the adress, please let us know. But I think 30 kilos are much ....! We will get our new puppie-girl in 8 weeks and in october we stay again in jomtien. May see you and your dog, because we will get homesickness after our puppy. Greetings!

I had to take buster to the vet this week. After 2 days of very bad craps he still weighed in at 31 k's, time for a diet.

Hi kurgen (sorry for writing your name wrong first time). You have to go from the dolphin-roundabout along the mainstreet to naklua. On the left side will be a vet, but please don't go there, you have to take a longer walk (or you drive by car) and than you will arrive at the vet. He is very very good (I don't no his name at the moment). Important is: the second one and not the first!!! If it is nessesary, he is able to make operations also. Good luck!!!! Edith&Rudi
