Newbie Looking For A Short Term Teaching Job

Featured Replies

Hi there,

I've been doing some lurking around in this forum, but I wasn't able to find what I was looking for .... I got tired of reading through the thread when I reached page 12 .....

At the moment I have a CertTESOL from Trinity of London Cambridge. I sat the course here in Auckland, New Zealand. But I won't be finishing my degree until this time next year ....

I'll be letting off steam and do some travelling around Asia at the end of this year and I'll be staying in BKK for a week or two. I my flight arrive there at at the of Nov this year ....

Would I be able to get a short term teaching job there?? The university year does not start here until the end of Feb.

Is it possible for me to get a teaching job for a month or two during Dec/Jan?? Or is it not worth the bother??

I have a feeling that it's not really worth it .... But I thought I'd ask anyway.

Almost anybody with white skin can get a job in Bangkok. Did you study grammar when you did your TESOL?

I'll bet the CELTA had more than enough grammar, and very little if anything about teaching to children and teenagers in Asia.

School is in session during that time. If you're honest, you're not going to get a long term gig. Maybe a language center, though.

Thanks for the reply Dan. The course did a big chunk of grammar and six hours teaching experience as part of the assessment :D Unfortunately I'm asian and I don't have white skin :D I was born in aussie, but I moved here in NZ to get my degree since the University of Auckland gave me a full scholarship for my degree ....... I'm not sure what the chances are of getting a teaching job there since I'm asian :o

There will probably be some school that will need someone for a time. Where I work, we usually have someone who is either hospitalized, gone for a family emergency, death etc. Keep a high profile as you get ready to leave and you will probably find something.

Language schools are a sure bet.

Thanks Scott :o I originally planned on travelling around Asia and then spending the rest of my time in Korea since my best friend works there, but I've just come to realise that they'll be experiencing winter in Korea, I'd rather spend the rest of my time in Bangkok and away from shitty weather, teaching temporarily will stop me from going broke :D
