why do thais forget there poor past when they become rich?

Featured Replies

I was in in the house if a ex bar girl who married a rich swiss falang only to have my jaw drop at the way she yelled and screamed at her maid .

I almost had to sew my mouth to not remind of her past .

Why cant they remember where they came and what they been doing to get to this point??

Because they learn how to be a high class lady from watching Thai soaps!

This is one ex-bargirl--ONE--and you're suggesting that all Thais behave this way? TROLL THREAD!

Don't turn this into another Thai bashing topic please.

Being authoratative over subservients is proper. Yelling and screaming at the maid is a sign of her class. People with class do not need to yell and scream.

Maybe the maid did something wrong?

Some poor Thais who have pulled out of poverty (there's not many), and whom I know, are deeply ashamed of their poor roots. It manifests itself in diverse ways, such as being hard on those who remind them of their own past, or totally distancing themselves from their own roots by whatever it takes to do so.

One young Thai man from Isaan, when he got his undergrad and grad degrees (financed by gifts of teachers and a few foreign friends) forsook his dirt-poor family because they reminded him of his painful past. He moved off to Australia to live the high life and won't even answer questions about the welfare of his family. I would guess he hasn't seen any of them (mother, grandmother, aunt, cousin) in years. Reprehensible, to be sure, but not unusual.

In the same breath, I certainly know some Vietnamese, Cambodians and Americans who are guilty of the same behavior. Could it just possibly be the human condition?

It all boils down to the person's character and upbringing. Does not represent all thais or all ex-bar girls.

One could the suggest the same thing happens with a lot of farang's in Thailand, they come to Thailand with a few bob in their pocket, which by the standards of their own country ain't much money to start with, all of a sudden said farang's think they are lord of the manor, a big bwana amongst the natives.

Being authoratative over subservients is proper. Yelling and screaming at the maid is a sign of her class. People with class do not need to yell and scream.

actually you treat the maid better than someone who is almost your level.....at least where I come from.

I can not believe how stupid this post and question is.

Firstly it's not only Thai who turn into <deleted> when they walk into money.

Secondly an <deleted> was always an <deleted> just did not have a maid to scream at.

Thirdly, many hookers are very rude to normal working people in low paid positions even before they marry a buffalo. Some even dare to be rude to business owners but usually put back in their place pretty fast and reminded of who and what they are

You can take the girl out of the bar, but not the bar out of the girl.

NO MATTER WHAT THE NATIONALITY !

To be fair it's not an uncommon occurrence to see Thai women who had nothing turning into 'madames' when they have someone's money to spend..... not the abusiveness but the airs and graces.

Then again, it's all part of a 'marry a rich man' dream.

You can take your bar out of the girl but you cant take the girl off your bar.

Sent from my c64

Mother in law, certainly not. She made the money. Still works from 6am to 9pm at night everyday at almost 80 years old.

Spoilt as hell BIL perhaps, his trailer trash gold digging wife and her gold digging family - Yep certainly have, all it took was engagement for it to happen. Seems to think everything that MIL owns is theirs (she even said/ screamed it at me) and staff at all the businesses work for them, ordering them about while sitting on their fat backsides. Try paying them then. Everyone hates them. Mother in law has no respect for her son (doesn't know her will has been changed yet smile.png ) and hates his wife and family. Said the same thing as someone posted "She's been watching too many soaps".

If you're going to get a gold digger at least get a decent looking one. bah.gif

Any reason why they should remember their past?

In western culture we are encouraged to be humble and respectful of our history. This has never been in vogue in Thailand. They love to be hi-so even if up to their necks in debt. Pretty shallow really.

Secondly an <deleted> was always an <deleted> just did not have a maid to scream at.

True that.

The ones that make me laugh are the x bar girls who are nasty and always yelling at their Farang boyfriends (husbands) in front or other people. I never disrespect anyone and if a woman ever did that to me it would be over at that moment....End of story !!!

I worded it poorly. Being authoratative is proper in Thailand, but authoratative does not mean superior in the sense of showing contempt or disrespect.

My wife had a fairly poor upbringing and she uses it as more of a tool these days to teach my stepson about the value of things like going for a pizza, playing computer games etc.

She will never forget her shitty childhood, in the example of the OP ignorant rude people will always be ignorant rude people regardless of the amount of money in their account.

Don't listen to the Apologists and their rude comments.

I have seen this with my maids. When I hire a maid I take care of her. I pay her healthcare, her dentist, take care of her kids and parents and gift her whatever money she needs to pay off debts. I do this because I was raised a Socialist and I believe in it and because of my religion so I think we should share what we have and help others.

As soon as any of them move up a rank thus requiring me to hire a new woman they almost always treat her poorly because she comes to me as they had, poor and in need. I suppose it has to do with the very complicated belief system where one has what one's karma dictates. In other words if one is in need it is because of bad karma so one deserves to be treated badly.

Mind you this isn't everyone but the attitude is very prevalent.

Thais call this such vulgar behavior in Thai "Prai ไพร่" which has to do with poor upbringing and class level as "peasant".

you must really be a young and unexperienced lad my friend... This behaviour is exactly the same all over the world. Sweden, go over to USA and so on... As soon as money rolls into the bankaccount people change and feels that they are better than others......

Look at upnoosed Bangkokians, middleclass a#holes from Sweden or halfrich maniacs from the USA......There you got it, all over it is the same.

For me, it is a fairly simple answer. Thailand is a highly stratified "class" society based solely on how much money you have and nothing to do with the kind of person you are. So when a poor person comes into money they can't wait to lord it over those who are now beneath them, money-wise.

For me it isn't much different than a person who was abused as a child and grows up to be an abuser. People tend to give back to others what they experienced growing up. Of course, not everyone doe this, but a significant number of them do so that you are always running into it in one form or another.

Thank goodness not all Thai people who were poor growing up are like that. If my wife ever did that, her and I would be history, but she is wonderful with all people who are good to her.

It's not a Thai thing or the bar in the girl.

Studies show an increase in wealth and status decreases our feeling of compassion for others.

To a certain point and perhaps only in respect to a specific age group. The period in which people came of age has a major influence, My observation is that people who grew up in the dirty 30's and endured WWII tend to be thoughtful of those in trying circumstances. People who grew up in the booming 50's and early 60's have a selfish streak to them. The people who grew up in mid 60's to mid 70's have kept some of their youthful ideals and it shows in their kids. Then we get to the disco era and the greedy 80's generation and they are just one useless group of people and they have produced some even worse offspring. My simplistic opinion. smile.png

It's no different here to any other country, having lots of money changes nearly everyone into an <deleted> lol
