Sterling Cheque into Thai Bank account?

Featured Replies

I would appreciate advice about paying a UK cheque made out in GBP (pound sterling £) into a Thai Bank account.

Is it possible to do this and if so how long before it clears and cash becomes available please.

Possible. Several weeks. There will be stiff charges.

300 Baht charge and 3 to 6 weeks to clear.

Also a 10 pound charge, undisclosed by the intermediary clearing bank.

Thank you all for your response. The cheque will be in sterling made out in the name of a Thai national from British Airways for the six hour delay to flight BA9 last Saturday. The sterling equivalent to 600 euros which is the compensation due under eu regulations.

HSBC lowered the wire fee to 4 quid, I think. Mail it to your UK bank, then do an online wire to Thailand.

Last time I did that it took several weeks and the fees were outrageous!

I've paid a number of Sterling cheques into SCB. Never been charged a fee, and received a favourable exchange rate.

Yes it's possible. I'd agree with above if into a Thai bank acc. Would have said 4-6 weeks as an indication, but it varies, ball park 300 baht + 3 baht stamp duty

See if it's possible for the person paying to transfer visa another method instead such as SWIFT.

Failing that easier to pay foreign currency cheques into a Singapore Bank's foreign currency accounts.

As a Brit tho much easier to pay into a UK bank account of your own or family member etc and do a SWIFT transfer.

If you can get a USD instead of GBP cheque BKK Bank has a faster clearance process for certain kinds of cheques that may be applicable.

Cheers

Fletch :)
