AFTERMATH
Police, army join PDRC checkpoints

BANGKOK: -- Police, soldiers and guards of People's Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) will work together to set up checkpoints around rally site to provide safety for protesters.

The move comes in the wake of Thursday's fatal attacks, which killed three protesters and injured many others.

Deputy Metropolitan Commissioner Pol Maj Gen Chantawit Ramasutra said the checkpoints, which will be about 100 metres from the rally site, are designed to prevent more attacks and the smuggling of weapons into the area.

The new checkpoint structure follows discussions on safety plans between the police and PDRC representatives. The PDRC has not previously allowed police to join the checkpoints or enter the rally sites.

In the early hours of Thursday, several M79 grenades were fired at protesters sleeping at the Democracy Monument, which is on the outer zone of the rally site. The main stage of the rally is now at Rachadamnoen Nok near United Nations headquarters.

Chantawit added that police checkpoints near the rally site would be increased from 10 to about 20 with 34 more around Bangkok. Rapid response teams will also be added and mobile units will work around the clock. These new measures have been applied since Thursday night.

It's a ploy to surround the ones with arrest warrants on them, ready for the "surprise" assault by the recently appointed elite police squad.

finally after 6 months the police will start doing their job, I dont believe it. They will probably still let the reds toss grenades and shoot at the protesters though after all, they dont really want to stop their team from doing all the damage

Do you really think the PDRC are that gullible? I tend to think not.

Arrests are usually planned and made in secret in order to avoid collateral damage, not announced in the nation's newspapers.

Suthep may be detested by many, but he's no Jatuporn.

Ah but the army is there as well.

A step in the right direction but a long way to go.

The way out of all this is for the army to force the police to combine with them in a peace keeping force,

That is combine at all levels with the police chief in an office with the army chief and army officers of the same rank in all the regional and district police HQ,s.

That will force the police to do their job as they will be under the eye of the army at all times.

The main problem is in the BKK area and there must be combined army and police patrols there.

Remember the only time any reds have been caught with weapons was when the army was present.

In most of the country there should be no problem but there should still be army units ready to work with the police at all levels.

CAPO and the DSI would be included in this with army officers alongside the incumbents to make them do the jobs they are supposed to be doing. Could even be that the ordinary staff there would be happy to have someone to keep a thumb on Tarit and Chalerm.

The army and police combining is how thing are being done in the south so there is a precedent.

The squeals of coup would resound around PT and their supporters, but no the army are only combining with the police to help keep order in an extraordinary situation.

Even though the police brass are doing it under duress I suspect the rank and file of the police would be quite happy to have the army there to back them.

The Govt (whats little that's left of it) and all other organisations would still function without army interference, see no coup only a combined peacekeeping force.

With the army there, the cowardly grenade launcher attacks on the protestors should be minimized. Little red sympathizers cry about people getting beating up by PRDC guards while ignoring the protestors getting MURDERED.

I doubt if this will stop any fanatic paid the right price to do it. They will just move again to throwing grenades at the EC and CC and any other place that is an easy target

Did they have to take 6 months to come to an obvious action like this? Anyway, better later than never.

Why don't you take the time to read the opening post : The PDRC has not previously allowed police to join the checkpoints or enter the rally sites.

And where I stated is fault of police, army or PDRC? It was just more smart if the 3 of them came to this solution months before.

"Pol Maj Gen Chantawit Ramasutra said the checkpoints, which will be about 100 metres from the rally site, are designed to prevent more attacks"

I thought these M-79 grenade launchers can fire 400m?

Although they have the accuracy of Thai cricket bowlers... which is a hope of hitting the wicket within 400m in every direction, shouldn't checkpoints be set-up at least half a mile away?

Then again... that would be beyond logical thought, which exists in leaps and bounds in LOS. w00t.gif

good maybe soon well see end or at least beginning of end of Taksin his evil clan and rest of red shirt thugs

well done Suphet for being only one able and willing to at least try and stop Taksin

Hopefully they will also ensure that people who disagree with the protestors and either shout out slogans or remove obstructing traffic cones are protected from physical attack by the PDRC/PCAD.

I also hope those who are responsible or caught trying to blow up people, will be arrested (for a change) thumbsup.gif

Quite frankly, it's not the military's job, but if the police don't step up, who should?

That is simply not true. I suggest you read the posts. More often than not, it is PDRC sympathisers who make excuses for the violence committed by the sold called security guards.

Why would the Army be at the Air force base?

I think he may be accounting for the fact the red/yellow attack ratio is running about 30 to1, in favor of red attacking, bombing, shooting, killing, and generally blowing up yellows.

Don't get excited.

They will be severely curtailing the PDRC ability to smuggle in guns and Naval personel which is quite right and about time. As the Army are with them, they can then side with police who arrest people with guns, or show their colours and let them go... as the Courts do.

They have the pretext now to be stopping and searching vehicles in the area in order to be seen to be protecting Suthep.

I am delighted with this and it a much shrewder move than it first appears. Suthep will be livid as he knows his guards are going to be photo'd and registered for later retribution. Unless they are all going to sleep on the streets with his mob. hahahahahaha.

Removing traffic cones, under the eyes of the police? Brave, very brave. The police may do the physical attack followed by handcuffing you.

In thevery beginning there was police around, but there were provblems with armed undercover policemen, a certain bias against the anti-government protesters fueled by the Yingluck government and Pheu Thai people and CAPO/DSI calling the protesters all king of names. Then is was decided to keep the police out.

Now the police, army and PDRC will guard together. To be seen if this means an end to the almost 100 grenades lobbed on the anti-government protesters

Ask the CAPO as they asked the army regularly to provide protection for this one or another. Bunch of hypocrites.

Logic not correct. TVGerry said "while ignoring the protesters getting MURDERED". Like you ignore that.

If it is logic you want.

They are not protesters. They are actively trying to put their own elitist allies into un-assailable positions of power. Using violence, intimidation and Classic 30's fascist tactics. Not having the numbers to do this and suceed, they are aided and abbetted by an army and court set up that is FRANTICALLY trying to keep them on the streets to legitimise any coup or power grab they may pull off.

Achieving this power grab the Army would be used to shoot any body that protested against the coup as they did last time. There would be no elections, and "reform" would be straight out dissenfranchisement of most of the north of the country.

During the press conference with the Men of State The retired general used the phrase that any objectors to the appointed PM should be destroyed!!!! All of these old boys were in active service when the attrocities were carried out in the 70's

If you want to weep about shot protestors try this. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p00b1z3s

Please excuse us if we do not weep and wail when this vile mob is given a dose of its own medicine. There are much more worthy things to weep for like the fall of Democracy, the appointment of PDRC figures into all courts and election bodies.

Who is "us" Pipkins?

I fail to remember anyone shot for protesting against the junta after the last coup, you wouldn't be lying about that, would you?
