PHNOM PENH, May 20 (Bernama) -- Cambodia received 424,300 visitors from Asean countries in the first quarter of the year, up 4 per cent year-on-year.

Data from the Tourism Ministry showed tourist arrivals from Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) accounted for 33 per cent of 1.27 million overseas arrivals from January to March, Vietnam News Agency (VNA) reports.

Vietnam topped the list with 189,800 visitors followed by Laos with 99,000 and Thailand with 52,200.

Malaysia and the Philippines came fourth and fifth with 32,800 and 27,900 tourists respectively.

Some 13,200 Singaporeans, 8,000 Indonesians, 1,200 Burmese and 230 Bruneians visited Cambodia during this period.

Ang Kim Eang, president of Cambodia Association of Travel Agents, attributed the growth of Asean visitors to Cambodia to efficient road and air transport between Cambodia and Asean.

Visa-free agreements for holders of ordinary passports between Cambodia and other regional countries have also boosted the rising number of Asean travellers to the country.
