Ban calls for return to civilian order

The Nation

NEW YORK: -- Appealing for "a prompt return to civilian order" in Thailand, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon expressed serious concern about the military takeover in the country today and urged all parties to respect human rights and refrain from violence.

"The Secretary-General is seriously concerned by the military takeover in Thailand," said a statement issued by a UN spokesperson in New York - the
second one pertaining to the country in the past 72 hours.

The Thai military seized control on Thursday following months of unrest and widespread protests in Bangkok and elsewhere

"He appeals for a prompt return to constitutional, civilian, democratic rule and an all-inclusive dialogue that will pave the way for long-term peace and prosperity in Thailand," said today's statement, which added that the UN chief urged all parties to work together constructively, refrain from violence and respect human rights.

.......just like YOU'RE not entitled to subject us to the same garbled Maoist claptrap every time you post. If your leaders werent killing people on a daily basis there would be no need for a coup - think about your sides actions for a change!!! General Prayuth deserves the highest medal Thailand can award!!!

Ban calls for return to civilian order, so that the ruling party can arm its supporters with war weapons?

They may have been voted for in a blatant vote buying election which has cost Thailand billions of baht which could have been spent on hospitals, schools and infrastructure. Then they behaved undemocratically and illegally trying to bring back the convicted criminal from Dubai. I don't know why the General waited so long. Hopefully he will lock up all the criminals in PTP for an extended duration, preferably in a jail in Southern Thailand.

I think everyone agrees that both parties could not agree on whether to have a nice coldie or a cuppa tea, let alone anything else , so the shortcut method was adopted, went rather well I thought.coffee1.gif

Wow why is it that when someone post the simple facts all you can do is degrade or name call, who are you refering to when you say killing people on a daily basis? Since this all started in 1932 each side has been killing each other in this ongoing struggle no side is better than the other when it comes to there violent actions.

The UN and the outside world has every right to be concerned, Suthep, Abhisit and the General all answer to the same masters and if they get there way it could mean big trouble for many Thai people as well as foreigners.

Mr Moon , just as soon as one or two things are sorted , then Thailand shall have another go, this time with proper reforms ,not reforms on the run and a much more transparent and democratic modelling, a little patience please Sir. coffee1.gif

The title should have been

"Ban calls for return to civilian disorder"

Further More Australia is "gravely concerned" about Thai coup.

Thailand has equaled Australia's impressive performance of 3 Prime Ministers in as many months established in 2013.

It's a neck and neck race for the fourth PM After Thailand defeating Australia in the volley ball this week Australia is gravely concerned

about Thailand appointing it's next PM before Australia and thus taking the lead.

However PM Abbott is within a wink of the lead and maybe ousted by his party very soon after numerous corruption scandals and a disastrous

budget. Abbott has firmed in the betting today after Thailand's new PM arrested all opposition.

Betting details will be provided in future updates.

I think the Oz Government, The UN and the USA govt should look closely at civilian corruption here.

The upholders of the law here allow little kids to ride motor bikes, older kids can't see the reason for helmets after sun-set, and hundreds die each year as drunk drivers and the helmet-less riders and their families pay 100baht fines and just carry on.

The voters of this country don't know any other system, and before the big guns overseas continue mouthing off, they should be appraised of the situation with the civilian upholders of the law.

The Army moved in on Pattya rather swiftly - they obviously know something..

Why weren't the US or Mr. Baan concerned when there were protests for 3-4 months disrupting daily lives of "Civilians"....? I think it was the right thing to do..

I am sure they have enough work on their plates... so they should think of solving them first...

...if so....strange that he did not make the statement himself........very strange.....

UN is useless, It relies on uS and other countries to do the heavy lifting for them to take of Dictators and Killers of their on prople. They occupy prime realestate in MYC, their people do not even pay their traffic and parking tickets to NYC. I am not sure they pay taxes to US or NYC.

They should move with that other non-functional organization the EU. They have been busy allowing Europe to turn into a Socialist Welfare State with there doors wide open to illegal immigrants that are taking the hold area down.

So help me understand what business is it of theirs if Thailand needs to "Flush the toliet of corrupt government.

Hold the course General, but maybe turn on some of the Foreign TV so I can watch Golf and others can watch what they call "Football".

How is less than 50% an "overwhelming majority" ?

The same old Thaksin inspired propaganda. Don't worry about facts and the truth.

You probably think an overwhelming majority were in favor of a whitewash amnesty for Thaksin despite the hundreds of thousands of Thais from all walks of life who protested it.

Why would anyone support a Shin "utopia"? It would be a utopia for them and hell on earth for everyone else.

Australia - the democracy that treated the aborigines with such democracy. Commendable.

But he/she didn't post a simple fact. He/She posted a lie. A lie that is often told by the Shins and their supporters. They did not receive a majority of votes let alone an overwhelming majority. They were asked to form a government as the biggest minority.

AFP and BBC have a habit of repeating this lie regularly too.

Can't wait to blame the Coup for everything can you? The recession - started way before martial law was declared.

But, your silly comments don't change the fact that PTP only received a large minority vote. I realize PTP supporters hate facts. Sad that a corrupt regime needs military action to get rid of them, but they've already demonstrated their contempt for the rule of law and and judgments they don't like.

Still, you're more worried about what's on TV.

Im with you all the way Baerboxer, these political commentators and University professsors dont know what they are talking about. Its sexpats like yourself that understand true democracy. I bow to your superior understanding of political theories and just think its a shame you arent eligible to be PM biggrin.png

On a serious note I really think you need to grasp the meaning of what a majority government means and how voting systems work. A majority government means a majority of SEATS not of votes. As they use FPTP voting in Thailand, like the UK, one can be huge when the other more marginal. Perhaps when the bars shut early tonight you could read up on it.

Anyway enough of that - DOWN WITH THE SHINS, GO ON SUTHEP, IM MIDDLE CLASS TOO I PROMISE laugh.png

The PTP won 53% of the House seats. Not matter whether some say an overwhelming majority, it was a clear majority.

Ban Ki Moon you're about as much use as tits on a donkey. Go and sort out Somalia, Syria, Iran, Afghanistan, Palestine etc. I'm sure you've got enough problems that you have no idea to handle don't stick your nose in here.

I hope the Thais really love you because one day you may need assistance and don't pretend to be a Thai because your not.

Another cut and paste from a previous thread?

3 Prime Ministers in as many months established in 2013. But only 2 people involved Rudd and Gillard. Both useless and cut down by their own party.

I'll take 10 to 1 that Abbott will be the PM going in to the next election.

The Army moved in on Pattya rather swiftly - they obviously know something..

I rode a motorbike as a little kid in Oz without a helmet. I still ride a motorbike.

I firmly believe riding a motorbike when I was young has made me a far better rider/driver as I grew older. I do wear a helmet these days.

I see kids 3 or more up on bikes around the village everyday, most going to school, and they can handle the scooters quite well. Is it dangerous? They are going at about 30kph.

Lot less speed than I used to do and I survived.

And so will most of them, though I do wish they'd wear good helmets..

Its the way it is here.

Stop stressing and go with the flow.

I realise this concept may be hard to understand. A majority DOES NOT MEAN you have absolute power to do as you wish. In a democracy there is the Constitution that must be respected and adhered to and certain rules to follow.

When a democratically elected Government fails to follow the rules then they must be dismissed by one manner or another.

You are all so childish and have no idea of democratic behaveor. How is Sutep allowed to occupy the streets of Bangkok and challeng the coverment elected

and not to meantioned the costitunal court a joke like all thai courts. The army have far to much power, nothing seems to be civilazed.

The yellow side is fond of reminding us that the Prime Minister is elected by the votes of the MPs forming the government, Yingluck was the Prime Minister in a coalition government whose constituent parties won more than 50% of the popular vote.
