Lorry Driver Dies in Crash on Asian Highway in Chainat

A crash claimed the life of a 51-year-old lorry driver when his vehicle collided with the rear of a stationary trailer truck on the Asian Highway in Chainat Province during the early hours of 10 January. The crash occurred between kilometre markers 131-132 on the northbound side of Highway 32, in Suea Hok Subdistrict, Mueang District. Police from Mueang Chainat Police Station, rescue teams from the Ruam Katanyu Foundation, and medical staff from Chainat Narenthorn Hospital responded to the incident. At the scene, authorities discovered the lifeless body of the driver, identified as Mr. Wanchai, a resident of Chachoengsao Province. He was found trapped in the driver’s seat of his 10-wheel lorry, which had been crushed against the rear of the trailer truck. The trailer, which was not carrying any cargo, had been parked on the roadside due to a mechanical issue. Rescue teams used hydraulic cutting tools to extricate Mr. Wanchai’s body but struggled for over 25 minutes as the two vehicles were tightly wedged together. A second truck was eventually used to pull the vehicles apart, allowing the recovery of the deceased. A preliminary medical examination revealed severe injuries, including shattered legs, with the left leg nearly severed, and multiple wounds caused by the impact. The trailer truck’s driver, Mr. Phongsakorn, recounted that his vehicle had broken down, prompting him to park by the roadside while waiting for a mechanic. He said he was resting in the cab when the collision violently shook his truck and sent it skidding over 10 metres. Upon exiting the vehicle, he discovered the 10-wheel lorry had crashed into the rear of his trailer and immediately contacted the authorities. Police have detained Mr. Phongsakorn for further questioning to determine whether the trailer was parked safely with adequate warning signals, or if negligence contributed to the fatal collision. Investigators are reviewing the evidence to decide on appropriate charges. -- 2025-01-11 -

The incident occurred in Moo 19, Ban Noen Siam, Phra Phloeng Subdistrict, Khao Chakan District, Sa Kaeo Province. On 9 January, local officials, led by Phra Phloeng Subdistrict Chief Somchai Thayai and the special task force "Team Moo Loom," responded to reports of a man behaving erratically in a drug-fuelled rage. The assailant, identified as Mr. Phet, allegedly failed to recognise his mother before attacking her and his nephew, choking both. Village headman Mr. Surasak Pinsantia and administrative officers arrived at the scene and managed to restrain Mr. Phet, who displayed uncontrollable behaviour. Shortly after being subdued, he experienced convulsions and was rushed to Khao Chakan Hospital. Meanwhile, his mother and nephew were treated for injuries sustained during the attack. Phra Phloeng Subdistrict Chief Somchai stated that “the root cause of this violent outburst was drug addiction, which severely affects the brain and mental state, leading to depression, anxiety, and erratic behaviour. Prolonged drug use deteriorates physical and mental health, impairs motor skills, and poses a threat to the individual and those around them”. "This is another tragic example of the devastating impact of drug abuse," Mr. Somchai said. "We are intensifying efforts to combat drug addiction and provide treatment for users in line with the government's policies on public safety and rehabilitation." Mr. Phet and his mother remain under observation and care at Khao Chakan Hospital, while authorities continue their investigation into the incident. -- 2025-01-11 -

Going to Thailand for Surgery
Hello All, I have asked this question elsewhere and I have been told that it is not required but I thought I would ask here anyway, just to reassure myself. I am from the UK and I'm going to Thailand in the summer for a surgery. As I can travel to Thailand for 60 days visa exempt (+30 day extension) I just want to confirm that going to Thailand for a surgery (it will be a 3hr surgery, according to the surgeon) is fine? I am going for a total of 18 days and I will be having the surgery on the second day, recovery is ~1 day and then the rest of the time in Thailand I am expecting to go explore Bangkok. I am only there for a total of 18 days. The hospital are the ones who have told me when to book my flights for (the day to arrive and to leave) and they don't expect me to be there for more than 18 days. I have looked at multiple Thai medical tourism websites that all say that people from the UK and multiple other (I think about 90) countries don't need a visa to enter and only certain surgeries would require the use of a medical visa because of the length of stay required for recovery. Also, as I said, others have told me that visa exempt is fine, as I'll be back out of Thailand well within the time. I'm going for a browlift and liplift if that makes a difference? Thanks- 1
