Visa Run Basics

Featured Replies

Hey guys. I have to do my first real visa run on the 14th and I'm super confused about what the options are. I'm aware that some things have changed recently due to the coup and crackdowns but I'm not sure if they affect me or not.

I am currently here on my American passport, which has one 30-day visa exemption stamp in it, and one Tourist Visa stamp in it (plus the extension stamp).

I have my British passport as well which has no Thailand stamps. However if I can stay on my American passport for now that would probably be better.

I would like to do my run as quickly as possible as I have a lot of work I am in the middle of here. I would like to get a 60(+30) day Tourist Visa out of the deal, not just a 30 day Visa Exemption.

I have heard that I will have to fly to get this done. Is that true? Is it not possible to get a bus/van package for this?

What cities provide Multiple Entry Tourist Visas? If I could get multiple entries that would be super duper and worth a little more legwork.

Thanks so much folks.

You could go to laos, either Vientiane or Savannakhet and get a double entry tourist visa. If you submit your paperwork at the embassy/consulate before 1130 you will get the visa the next afternoon. It will give you two 60 day entries each of which can be extended for 30 days, so you get about 180 days with one border run and two 30 day extensions!.

There are no multiple entry tourist visas, only single, double and triple entry.
Only place in the region that will give you a double entry tourist visa is Vientiane in Laos.

For this you should get a non-immigrant B visa and a work permit.

I have to say, when you said ...

A work permit seems to be what you want

Okay okay let me clarify that when I say "I have a lot of work I am in the middle of" all I mean is that I get up and pursue goals every day. I am not getting paid for anything at the moment and I have no intention to work illegally here. You can be sure I would love to have a work visa, and if somebody here wanted to hire me for something I would insist that I get one.

So with that in mind I would still love some help with my original questions. Do I have to fly at all to get my Tourist Visa? Can I do it on a bus?

You can go by bus, train or automobile.

That could have been so much more fun if it was Trains, Planes and Automobiles ... laugh.png

Actually, I would have simply 'liked' the comment, but the holster is empty!

Oh that's good to know. Can you tell me where that information came from? The Savannakhet consulate's website seems to be only in Thai (which I am trying hard to learn to read but can't yet).

The info is from here http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/433392-current-visa-availability-summary-from-neighboring-countries/ and by others that go to Savannakhet. As for the triple there was a thread recently about an unhappy camper that got a triple at Savannahket. It is NOT recommended to get a triple Savannahket. UBJ should be able to fill us in.

Savannakhet will issue you a 3 entry tourist visa but it would be worthless because it would only be valid for 90 days from the date of issue. This means you would have to use all 3 entries within those 90 days. The 2 entry visa is the only good option.

To the OP. You have now learned that work is a dirty word when used on this forum unless you are asking about work permits. It would of been best to of said your were very busy and did not have a lot of time to do things.

Yes that was my mistake. I apologize for the confusion. I realize the forum has to maintain the rules so I appreciate your understanding and patience. Rest assured I am doing nothing but rapidly losing all my money in Thailand!

My current visa expires on a Saturday, but I assume the consulate won't be open on the weekend. I have heard that Mondays and Thursdays are the busiest days for the immigration offices. Is this likely to be the case at Savvanakhet? If so I will plan to get my application in on Wednesday morning, the 11th.

to answer some of your questions.. you can go by bus to Savannakhet but depending on where you

are.. take into account the time to travel.. Savannakhet is not so busy normally, so don't think you

have a monday/thursday problem.. just remember you pick up the next day and they are closed

weekends. also check for holidays which sometimes throw a wrench into the plans.
