Travelling deep in Issan during curfew

Featured Replies

I really hope that the curfew is over in a couple of months (in '72 seemed to go on forever) - My flight will arrive at 7 PM and with fast trak hope to get

out between 7:30-8:00pm. I have a driver from my village who is going to pick us up but it will be 1:00-2:00 AM at best. I see reports that you can

use your travel documents but has anyone tried this in Issan (going to Sarakham) or are they giving some other documents for this trip.

Don't worry. Curfew is already over in many places. If you have travel documents that you are arriving by air and you have a pre-booked taxi, it shouldn't be a problem even if the limited curfew (12- 4 am) is not lifted yet.

The curfew is not aimed at foreigners travelling, but more for locals engaging in political activities.

Btw there is a lot of traffic on the road anyway during curfew hours because many exceptions to the general rule.

Why don't you just get a hotel and have the driver pick you up the next day?

The curfew is not over in many places and certainly not in the North East !

The curfew is aimed at everyone - foreigners as much as Thai's

I have often stayed at a Bangkok Hotel to break the long journey back to North America. Well over 30 hours door to door. Why take a chance? Live within the rules and you cannot go wrong.

Curfew is imposed for all. Try to follow the rules and respect, and if it's a must only then travel.

There is a military check point on the road Udon Thani to Sakhon Nakon, I guess they stop every car during curfew hours.

It is just easier to stop somewhere like the Thong Ta hotel (about 850 Baht for a superior room with 25% online discount voucher - free shuttle from airport).

If you choose not to then you will not have a problem. There are increased checkpoints but it is only the last hour or so of your journey that you will traveling in the curfew hours - and you have travel documents you can show. They are unlikely to understand them but your driver can explain (if he has to bottle to turn up - despite what some posters have said the curfew is more of an issue for him than you. You should be aware of that).

The curfew is not there to create a 'police state' (it has been removed in many areas) it is there to make it difficult for 'undesirables' to move freely etc. Most have been rounded up and any feared pockets of insurrection have not materialised.

Agree with the above but beware as of posting the curfew is still 100% in effect for all of Bangkok, Central and Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai) and ALL of the Northeast aka ISSAN.
