Hydrogen Peroxide

This has probably come up before, but after the overnight relief I've experienced I just wanted to mention it. I get pain in all my teeth to the point it is very painful to eat. About a year ago I started to rinse my mouth out with a 3% solution of hydrogen peroxide. The pain went away after a couple of days. A few days ago I ran out of it and by yesterday I could barely eat my teeth hurt so much. Got some more hydrogen peroxide yesterday and just overnight my teeth are feeling better. One pleasant side affect is my wife hasn't complained about my foul breath since I started to use it.

I'm glad you are feeling better, but the pain you describe is not normal and warrants a visit to the dentist. You may have gum disease (especially since you also mention foul breath) which if not treated could lead to permanent loss of teeth.

Need to see not just any dentist, but a periodontist.

Yup, H2O2 3% is good stuff.

I brush with baking soda and rinse with peroxide.

Great vs gingivitis and only 30 baht per bottle.

Stock up.

How much do you dilute it?

Yap....It is the best mouth washer, and if you mix it with just a pin of fruit syrup, beat any expensive brand on the market. Under medical supervision peroxide water is the best and cheaper medication for many serious conditions...Read " The Miracle Water"....Explain everything...Amazing!!!

Mix it with a pint of fruit syrup? How can that be a good mouthwash it's loaded with sugar?

I too have intermittently mixed a bit of hydrogen per and water and gargled. I would not do full strength. I am only concerned about the cycle you describe. I fear you might be reaching an incorrect conclusion based on the pain coming and going with the use or not use. I'll just give you one thing to consider- I don't reach a conclusion but I want you to understand something (I have no idea what hardware or such you have temp or perm in your mouth):

The mouth has an incredible amount of "flora" that live there. They are not freeloaders. Yes, it's disgusting. However, many, many Bacteria and such live in a delicate balance. I would be concerned that you may have adopted a "kill 'em all and and let god sort 'em out" approach to the bacteria, and thus you aim to sterilize your mouth. You need a balance. This the first place digestion occurs and it's also a very important gateway for your immune system to interrogate the world. I'd seriously consider seeing a specialist. You may be inadvertently perpetuating a cycle that could be improved upon. Just do it? :-)

After posting this I noted a post before mine: you should know hydrogen peroxide is toxic/caustic to cells- that's how it destroys bacteria- lysis! It destroys the cell walls- but it also damages your own cells. This is why aware folks will only use HP to clean a wound INITIALLY, or not often. Remember this, if you use strong often HP your constantly causing the oral mucousa- ok, you get it.

3% is likely all you will find so don't stress. I would-me- would not advise taking full strength. It's long a staple of oral hygiene and other uses, but should be diluted. In the USA the dilution is listed on the reverse. I'm sure it's on the internet. I usually get lazy and just fill my mouth with water, open, and add a bit. Not rocket science but again, HP "="lysis" cells- it "crenates-" it destroys! I'd dilute. Brush, floss, rinse. I kindly ask you trust me, please.

PS, don't recall data but a common finding of people who live long is flossing; yep!

PEROXIDE & BAKING SODA - TOOTH WHITENER

Once every week or two I mix baking soda and peroxide into a paste and brush my teeth (and gums and tongue). Only use a soft brush (baking soda is abraisive), excellent tooth whitener but leave it on for a minute or two, or repeat a couple times.

I rinse with water not peroxide. Some articles

The peroxide may have caused damage to the gum line due to it's corrosive and oxidising effect (the foaming result); this will lead to the gum line receding around the teeth and expose sensitive parts of the teeth normally covered by the gum line.

Peroxide takes the pain away as it destroys the nerve endings as well.

Dental health and peroxide, combined with baking soda have benefits but diluted and used with care.

See a periodontist as Shery suggested above.

As a physical therapist trained in wound care in the US, we were taught that H2O2 was contraindicated as it is cytotoxic (kills cells).

However, I have looked into the evidence more thoroughly and no longer believe it should be avoided.

On the contrary.

It is not "caustic."

"Aware folks" will know that H2O2 is slightly acidic, the opposite of caustic.

Sheesh!

Not sure what Arjunadon means by "full strength."

3% is commonest in the pharmacies.

Bacteria have cell wall which are lysed by peroxide.

Somatic cells don't.

They have a lipid cell membrane tolerant to low concentrations.

As they say, a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing.

I believe the poster meant caustic in the lay, not chemical sense.

Actually H2O2 has both oxidizing and reducing properties i.e. it can act as wither an acid or a base depending on the pH of the solution it is added to.

In all but very dilute concentrations H2O2 damages tissues and cells. 3% H2O2 is OK if not overused. It is not however a very good disinfectant in vitro. Its main advantage is that it helps remove debris/dead tissue so it is most indicated for wounds that need debridement. I would not recommend using it on a wound which does not.
