Not the Roman Empire but the Byzantine Empire, that was the successor of the Roman Empire in the Greek-speaking, eastern part of the Mediterranean.

Christian in nature, it was perennially at war with the Muslims.

The Byzantine Empire existed for nearly 1125 years, and it's one of the greatest empires of all time.

isn't it also known as the holy roman empire?

Greatest? but fell to the ottomans.

No, it's not.

The Holy Roman Empire was a multi-ethnic complex of territories in central Europe that developed during the Middle Ages and continued until its dissolution in 1806. The core and largest territory of the empire was the Kingdom of Germany, though it included at times the Kingdom of Italy, the Kingdom of Bohemia, and the Kingdom of Burgundy, as well as numerous other territories.

Greatest? but fell to the ottomans.

Fact of history........Empires come and go.

Like a rich snob treats a hobo alcoholic.

Next.

Hit the nail on the head.

My wife is a Lao and guards her nationality closely. When asked she says she's from Issan.

Why? Because the warm friendliness she receives as being a member of the master race wouldn't be there as being from Lao. Who doesn't want t be spoken to and treated with respect.

If Thai's knew she were Lao she would be given as much respect as falang (minimal) because she has some wealth, but without , as much as a dog.

Wow so that's bad. Yet right here in this thread i had ppl chiding me for asking on the behavior of others as if i were somehow responsible for thais acting this way towards laotians like what your wife does right here.

Btw what foreigners get the most respect? You put that farang have minimal respect in thailand so i suppose non thais aka foreigners that get the most respect would be well japanese?

Btw what foreigners get the most respect?

Us Farangs ... they love us soooooo much ... sometimes even long time.

Mostly they like our white skin and our smart Caucasian features.

Highly desirable.

Most of the Asian and sub-Asian derivatives don't rate.

Though the Korean guys still are popular.

No problems.

Once you've finished ROFL and had a shower and a change of clothes (clean yourself man) ... please quote from this thread where, they have supported your statement ... rolleyes.gif

Same as everywhere else, the lower classes of society look down on them, the upper classes consider them equals.

I agree, it's goes on class, social standing.

This was probably a bit close to the bone for me and could feel myself getting angry as I wrote my previous comment.

Maybe I was a little unfair but I don't think a falang would ever be equal. You would be either higher or lower. Whichever it is, you would always be on the outside looking in.

My wife has close friends who know she's Lao and they love her the same. It's the people she doesn't know if she had Lao tattoo'd on her head wouldn't acknowledge her in the same way as a falang doesn't get acknowledged when with Thai people or my case Lao.

It's antiquated and rude.

OP, I don't understand this part of your question: "Do thai people treat citizens from these countries like how the US treats mexicans?"

Do you mean good or bad? The US is very good to Mexico and Mexicans, even the illegal immigrants.

The US does a lot of manufacturing in Mexico. The US buys a lot of farm products from Mexico,

Mexico is the #2 supplier of oil to the US, behind only Canada. The US helped Mexico develop its oil, but didn't steal it. It is purchased at market.

The US has a treaty to defend Mexico.

I don't see the Thais that I know being willing to do all of that for any neighbor.

The OP is questioning the treatment on a "street level" rather than on a "government level"

A lot of Americans, on a "street level", consider Mexicans to be dirty low-wage working people.

Your answer is yes then.

My previous 2 Thai girlfriends used to nod to me with a screwed up face say "not Thai" and with the same face and shake of the head say "not clean."

Promised myself would never have another relationship in Thailand as I couldn't cope with the Thai baggage.

Funny though I found genuine smiles and warm hearts and what I'd been led to believe about Thai people in the people they look down their noses at.

I do meet and know some really nice Thai people but when I hear this stuff or I go ngang wat and the band starts singing "come Thailand short time, not stay long time. Go home falang" with a dozen falang tapping their feet because they don't understand Thai, I lose hope.

I think they look down on their neighbouring countries, and I have heard some pretty derogatory things said about Laos, Burma and Cambodia.

true. I have overheard a couple of nasty things.

Actually it's not even Turkish, it was adopted by Ottomans from the Arab world in 16-17th centuries.

Could you please elaborate? What's the Arab world?

Excuse the off topic!

Pointless discussion really. The Cambodians look down on Thais and Vietnamese, the Vietnamese look down on Cambodians, the Thais look down on Burmese and Cambodians, the Chinese look down on everybody, and so on.....
