Tourist visa in cancelled passport, can I get an extension of stay in new passport?

Featured Replies

I have a two month tourist visa I got in Phnom Penh, about half way through. The passport it and the entry stamp are in are cancelled (corners cut off, cancelled stamp.) I have a new, completely empty passport. (Old one has only one page left.)

Previous to this entry I spent approx 2.5 months in Cambodia, i.e. there was a reasonably substantial break since I was last in Thailand.

Can I get a 1,900B 30 day extension at immigration? Due to the two passport scenario would they have to move anything to the new passport and if so would this cost more money?

If it is relevant, I have quite a lot of Thai visas, extensions and visa-free entries over the last two years or so in the cancelled passport. I haven't been working here but I have been here a fair bit and used it as a base to visit neighbouring countries (Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Philippines). Generally the border runs were not out and straight back in, I would generally spend between two weeks and three months out of Thailand before returning, although there were a few out and backs as I travelled down the western border with Myanmar.

If they hadn't made this change to the border hop policy I probably would have just made sure to be in Ranong by the expiry as I plan to spend my last month cycling down from there to Malaysia anyway.

Question (2) Do you think I could still do a border run at Ranong for 15 days (yes I am from a 15 day country)? Could I follow this with another into and out of Malaysia if I wanted another fortnight in the south?

Thanks for any advice.

Sorry for the duplicate posts, Tapatalk was giving me a "post failed" message.

Your other two have been removed.

There is no charge for transferring the stamps. Immigration may ask for a letter from your embassy about you getting a new passport from them.

The will do the stamp transfer first and then do the 30 day extension in your new passport.

Many thanks for that ubonjoe. Do they just transfer the entry stamp, or also the visa? It's not a big deal if there is no charge, I'm just a little concerned about space given my last passport lasted under three years.

Any idea about whether attempting a border run would be dodgy? Although if I can just get a month for 1,900B that would probably be less hassle than trying to ensure I am at getting to the two borders in question on the right days.

They will do an annotation about your visa entry and your entry/permit to stay stamp in your new passport. The 2 will take about half a page.

You should be able to do a border run but you would only get 15 days unless you are from a G7 country which means you would get 30 days.

I think I would do the extension first.

Thanks for that, I think I will do the extension in that case.
