June 15, 201412 yr My sister will be visiting CM for 4 days and I have been looking for tour guides. In particular, a walking tour of CM. Any suggestions? Thanks.
June 15, 201412 yr Popular Post I'm not sure who does it, but there's an organised tour of the old city on Segways. A friend did it and said it's a lot of fun.And I found it:http://www.segwaygibbon.com/
June 15, 201412 yr I'm not sure who does it, but there's an organised tour of the old city on Segways. A friend did it and said it's a lot of fun. And I found it: http://www.segwaygibbon.com/ It is actually A good way to see some of the Highlights in a short period of time. You can make note of the ones you want to come back and explore in more detail. Also because they are all in walking distance you will be able to get a closer look at the various shops. for instance around the corner from Wat Chedi Luang there is a place where you can go to get a massage by the blind people. Hint if you go in there tell them you want the gentle one. On the west side of the old city is another school for the blind. I have heard rumors of saunas in the old city. Take a songthaew to the Zoo. See the Panda bears. I don't believe 4 days will be hard to fill their time. At night they can walk to the Night Bazaar. Just wandering around the old city will be easy pretty hard to get lost. Have her carry a card with the name of where she is staying and the phone number with her. That is just in case she does get lost. A tuk tuk driver would be able to find it for her. any place in the old city would be 50 baht and even if they ripped her off for 60 baht is ten baht worth worrying about when you are on a four day holiday? For sure the Segway's would give her a good idea of what she wants to see and how to get there, Besides it can be fun getting lost in Chiang Mai if you have a card for the tuk tuk driver. Not sure how receptive a songthaew driver would be to a card. Might have to call at a price of course. I hope she enjoys Chiang Mai. In fact I am sure she will. Four days is not that long of time.
June 15, 201412 yr Sorry if I'm guilty of straying a little from the original topic (but I'm very interested in the Sedgway tour as my knee is almost repaired) The Chiang Mai Groups site seems to be a few years old now. However, I want to get out and about a lot more around Chiang Mai, meet people, like to meet both Thai and Farang. I'm also interested in photography and wonder if there is an active bird watcher's group here. All contacts appreciated.
June 15, 201412 yr I believe the Chiang Mai Expat Society has a photography group. Just don't buy investments off anyone in it.
June 15, 201412 yr CM is a wonderful city to walk around in - - no guide needed really. If you start at the Thapae Gate and wander around the little streets and alleys in the North East section it is quite charming and filled with little cafes and restaurants… Just get a little map and start walking… Sunday night walking street is the most interesting shopping in Thailand, lots of handcrafted items, the zoo, doi suthep, plenty of fun places to wander easily found and safe.
June 15, 201412 yr Popular Post I've been here 7-1/2 years, and except for being "sidelined" for the past 6 months due to a stroke, I sill enjoy finding new places in CM that I haven't seen before. One of my favorite things is to get on the CBR, ride into town around 9:00 at night and drive all the way around the moat. I've never failed to find someplace, or something new when I do that. In some ways, I'm still like a tourist, and love it.
June 15, 201412 yr Hey Chicog Finally agree with you 555555555 Sent from my iPad using Thaivisa Connect Thailand
June 15, 201412 yr Let her take a guided cycling tour trough the city or the outskirts of Chiang Mai.
June 15, 201412 yr I believe the Chiang Mai Expat Society has a photography group. Just don't buy investments off anyone in it. If anyone tries to sell you investments at a meeting of the Chiang Mai Expats Club or one of their Outside Group Activities -- like the Photography Club, please let me know. We've been cleaning house since March, thank you! Edited June 15, 201412 yr by NancyL
June 15, 201412 yr Author Wandering around discovering a city is always a great experience but so is walking around with a local person who is knowledgeable and enthusiastic about their city.
June 16, 201412 yr The Nancy Chandler map of CM available from most book shops is a good guide for exploring Chaingmai. Not so good for serious route finding, though. Otherwise Lonely Planet. guidebook or website, or Rough Guide. For most visitors a cheap older edition available in second hand bookshops near the Thapae gate will serve well enough.
June 16, 201412 yr Any body remember a Brit who organised walking tours a few years ago and subsequently got busted, no WP ???

I recently bought a nice new map of Chiang Mai, produced in Germany. It's very handy, as it shows all the subway stations. Really! Can't wait to see it happen.
