Does anyone know if there is an 'Export Shop" with clothes in XXL sizes in Haad Yai yet? There was a thread on this several years back (no positive replies), but would like to update as I am really in need of some new threads...

Hi phuketsub

Unfortunately the Export Shop went out of business a few years ago, it was a favourite of mine as I could find decent seconds for a fraction of their western price. I do know there's a shop on the road opposite Diana Department Store that caters to larger sizes but I can't remember if it for men, women or both.

Another option would be to come over to Phatthalung as there's a decent used clothes scene. I used to frown upon used clothes but having picked up some absolute bargains in an emergency I now see their value.

For example, I picked up a pair of brand new (genuine) Nike trainers for 150 baht and a pair a Slazenger track suit bottoms for 60 baht. Larger sizes are kind of normal as most if it, if not all, comes from the USA. Some of the stuff on offer is probably brand new but unwanted. Worth bearing in mind if you can't find what you're looking for in Hat Yai.

Also in Hat Yai it's worth having a look around some the street stalls around Lee Garden Plaza area as there could be some stuff sold in larger sizes. There's an indoor market by the clock tower that could also be worth checking out but haggle hard as they are used to Malaysians paying too much.

The indoor market by the clock tower on Thanon Phetkasem is called the 'Plaza' and is indeed very popular with Malaysians, including large size Indian families, so you might find what you want there.

But as said you need to haggle.

All shops in clock tower are very tricky.

I have worked in the area for like 3 years and I still dont get used to them.

You have to be very patient to haggle them down to over half of their price, and since Malaysians are also trying to get large discounts, these vendors knows how to handle people who likes to haggle.

Unless you are lucky to find a kind seller or unless you know how much they really worth for, avoid the place.

Another place to try out is Kimyong market. Upstairs there's a few men's clothing sellers. The last time I needed shirts I bought three short sleeved cotton shirts for a thousand baht. No haggling was needed there as they get far fewer tourists going up there.

I didn't know there was an upstairs. This is the indoor warren between Sai Song and Sai Sam, north end? The place that has one alley seemingly dedicated to dildos, viagra, Cialis and porn?

No, you're thinking of Santisuk market. The place full of DVDs, sex toys and pirated stuff. Using that market as a shortcut always leaves me feeling grubby. Kimyong market is the one full of things smuggled in from Malaysia, mainly food items and cheap tacky stuff made in China. It's at the junction by the railway bridge (Phetkasem Road) and the roads leading into downtown Hat Yai. Kasikorn bank is on the corner and it's behind there.

There's a set of stairs on Supasarnrangsan Road leading upstairs, I never noticed them when I lived in HY as all the pavement sellers blocked the view of the stairs but went up to have a look around and found better stuff than downstairs.

Pirated goods in this country?! My head is spinning!

You could always go to a tailors. I use the one near the police headquaters the tailors shop is called 'Police', they'll copy anything I give them and they make good copies - not that cheap but you get what you pay for.
