Bad Business Practices

Featured Replies

Is it against forum rules to report our experience with scams, fraud, racism, etc when it is conducted by a business (but we don't name the business, just the experience, so that others may be aware of that?).

No.

So, what happened?

As long as you don't " Name & Shame " shouldn't be a problem.

This is the rule that applies:

6) Do not post comments that could be reasonably construed as defamation or libel. Defamation is the issuance of a statement about another person or business which causes that person to suffer harm. Libel is when the defamatory statement is published either in a drawing, painting, cinematography, film, picture or letters made visible by any means, or any other recording instruments, recording picture or letters, or by broadcasting or spreading picture, or by propagation by any other means. Defamation is both a civil and criminal charge in Thailand.

This is about 'free check ups' at the dentist. It was in bkk.

The xray machine wasn't working, and so the dentist proceeded without. She asked where I had pain, she tapped around the area but found nothing, then decided we needed to do a test to check for a cracked tooth. She said nothing about this test costing anything.

Well indeed she found a cracked tooth. Two options, root canal with cap (about 10k), or extract the tooth. (The end of this story is that I went to another clinic immediately afterwards, and I do not have a cracked tooth).

I asked how about the other teeth, any cavities? She said there was nothing significant, just a few small ones, nothings that we needed to take care of right now. Well, I know for a fact that she did not even check my other teeth.

She asked if I wanted her to do a quick repair of the 'cracked tooth', 300B. Nope.

So when she saw that she wasn't going to be getting anything out of this, the cracked tooth test sudden'y cost 200B, and 80b for sterilization.

I politely said I would like to have been informed about this BEFORE she proceeded, she then began a stream of justification about how this is 'normal practice', and it is advertised at the counter, and how she didn't even charge me the 300B for the check up. I replied,"but it's free isn't it?" She said, "yes".

I went to the counter, and no signs there about hidden fees, but she pulled out a book from a drawer behind the counter, and continued how this was 'normal practice'...indeed.

So I left paying 80B, went to another clinic and found that what I had was a cavity, not a cracked tooth. Implications unbound, but what can you do about it? Of course, they no doubt feel the same, what can the farang do about it? You loose a tooth and 10k+, who cares?

Well, posting a bad experience is okay. Double posting ain't.

My other posts were deleted, hence the question.

Sounds the same as a "free" brake check at Midas Muffler et al back in North America or the guy that knocks on the door and tells you he was up on next doors roof and saw you have a broken tile. coffee1.gif

I don't understand the post. Is the tooth cracked or not?

So now you have the dilemna of not knowing which of the two dentists (if either) are giving you the correct information/diagnosis.

2nd dentist confirmed it was not cracked. They did the same test, for free.

Um.......why did you believe the second dentist made the correct diagnosis when he/she totally contradicted the first dentist's diagnosis?

Yep, you get two opinions. Then you get a third one to break the tie.

That only works if there are more good dentists than bad dentists out there. Even then it's far from a sure thing.

Fair enough, mate. And since there really are no bargains in brain surgery or dentistry, I'd have to wonder about a "free" exam by a ... ahem ... "qualified" dentist.

He believed the cheaper option as it justified his quest.
