Hi Everyone,

I'm British, living in the UK with my 4 year old son who was born in Thailand. My son's mother is Thai and lives in Bangkok. We are not in a relationship though we are on good terms. I have custody of my son though only verbally agreed, I don't have anything in writing from a court etc...

Unable to settle back here in the UK, my son and I will return to Thailand soonish. I will return on a year Non-O. Eventually, I intend to work in Bangkok so my questions are;

1. Can I obtain a work permit on a Non-O?

2. Can I pay tax without a work permit?

3. What is the criteria for extension of stay?

I understand that once my year Non-O runs out I would be able to renew it by showing proof of a monthly income of B40,000, in a Thai bank account, right?

If I renew the Non-O and immigration ask to see funds in my account, what will happen if I don't have a work permit but my account shows I'm being paid by an employer?

Basically, my future lies in Thailand so I'd like to know what visas will allow me to work and live legally with the least visa runs possible.

All replies will be much appreciated

I am not sure you will get a multiple entry non-o based upon having a Thai child unless you are the legal father of your child by way of legitimization. If not you could get a single entry non-o and then get a 60 day extension at immigration to visit your child.

1. You can can get a work permit and work with non-o based upon being the parent of a Thai child.

2. You can pay taxes but it will be of no use to prove income without a work permit.

3. First you will have to to legitimize your parenthood to get the extension of stay. See How To Gain Parental Rights As A Father

To get a one year extension of stay based upon being the parent of a Thai child you need 400k baht in a Thai bank in your name only or 40k baht income. If working you need to show tax payments receipts to prove the income and a work to permit to prove you are working legally.

Your visa does not have to be expired to apply for an extension you can apply for it during the last 30 dayd on any of the 90 day entries the visa allows.
