Where to move in Chiang Mai for 3 months?

I'm coming to CM for my first time, to stay there for 3 months to do an internship and looking for advice on finding a place to rent. I have been looking at different areas of the city but not sure what would be the most suitable for me.

Not sure what the area is called, but I will be working a couple of miles south-west from the CM Airport.

I'm looking for an apartment that meets the following criteria:

  • Budget max: 5000 baht/month (but can be flexible)
  • Not too far away from work
  • Not too far away from the old city centre
  • With a kitchen!
  • AC
  • Wifi

About myself: I'm 22 years old, will probably be joining Powerhouse fitness (north from the airport) to go to gym after work, and I'll be enjoying the nightlife on the weekends. I'll most probably rent a motorbike for the time I'm there to get around.

I was looking at a guide on places to live at, and behind the Chiang Mai University sounded like a good area to me. I was trying to find websites with accomodation and found some serviced apartments that looked good, but they had no kitchens and I like to cook my own meals..

If you could recommend any areas to live in and websites where to look for accomodation, that would be great!

Thanks!

If you are 22 look for a place on or near Nimmahimnan - you are near the main roads to move around and it is buzzing, the old city is about a mile away but I think you will enjoy Nimman area.

You may need to pay a little over 5000 there and no idea about a kitchen but in my honest opinion it is cheaper to eat out than cook here, That said I like cooking also.

Have a look on bahtsold website for rentals - good luck

I think at 5000 you will either have to compromise on location or the room/building, especially for only 3 months.

Since those compromises are such a personal thing I would really advocate making your choice once you are here-just book somewhere cheap for a few nights. Far better than booking ahead and regretting your choice.

To get an idea of prices etc you could scan the website for Buyinchiangmai (dont be put off by the name!) and Perfect Homes- I am sure there are others but they are 2 I know of.

And maybe ask for suggestions from the folks where you are doing your internship.

Cooking- many dont because eating out is cheap and fun, and cooking in can be pretty hot. But surprising what you can knock up with a microwave, portable hotplate and ricecooker, all of which can be inexpensively bought, and resold when you leave.

You will get better suggestions but them's mine!

Good luck and I am sure you will enjoy your time here- great place to be at 22!!

Yeah, Nimmahimnan seems good but read it was pretty expensive. Now looking at it, it doesn't seem too bad and I can actually go up to 10 000/month without any problem if necessary.

You can join the Chiang Mai Expats Club to know more people staying in CM as well.

Had a look, thanks.

Perfect homes seems like a quality website! Thanks for the tips.

Yeah that's actually my plan to book a hotel for the first nights and go have a look before booking anything longer term.

The reason I want a kitchen is because I follow a pretty strict diet and find it difficult to eat the right stuff if I can't cook myself.. also I eat very large amounts of food over 4 times a day, which could get expensive if eating out all the time. I found I had to order double or triple portions in most placest the last time I was in Thailand! biggrin.png

I second for Nimman area. Its fun area.

Powerhouse is right opposite and old city is not too far.

Look up ST apartment website. Maybe you find something there for short term rental.

But you might have to compromise for the kitchen thing.

You need to double your rent budget!

Sorry to say it..

Also, i know you want to live in the city, but if you go outside ringroad (minimum super highway) you can get something decent for your pricerange.

Also in the city they usually charge extra on electric, so you will end up paying 1500b extra per month on electric. Maybe better to live in a better condo, where rent is higher but you pay electric yourself..

I can recommend hillside plaza 7-8-9,in chiang mai businesspark, behind bigc on super highway.

They charge 7000thb per month, and great quality for the money. Last but not least, you pay electric yourself.!

10 min from city.

I will double the budget then, no problem with that. With hillside plaza do you mean the "HILLSIDE PLAZA & CONDOTEL 4"? This is what I found when I googled it and the location seems good. No prices on their website though.
