I should just point out that the word buffering refers to the ability of a compound to dampen out or prevent changes in pH.

So if bicarbonate helps to increase athletic performance by a buffering effect ( and I do not think that this has been proved to be the actual mechanism of the effect), this means that it makes any changes in plasma or cellular pH that occur within the normal range during exercise smaller than they would otherwise be.

So any beneficial effects would be occurring not through changing pH, but by helping to keep the pH even more tightly held within the normal range despite exercise stresses .

Other posts in the thread about changing the body's pH for health effects by drinking or eating acids or alkalis are, as Sheryl has pointed out, completely wrong.

The body is a machine that is designed to keep pH within the normal metabolic limits whatever you eat. To overcome these mechanism by extreme measures will be dangerous to your health.

if the body is such a great machine

than why eat vegetables and not junk food every day ?

when u get sick, your body is in a more acidic state

when you eat junk food, your body needs to buffer this acidic food by getting buffers from your minerals and eventually bones (aka stored minerals)

Well as noted, this is just completely untrue.

To find out why, why not just go to a library and borrow an elementary text book on nutrition or physiology, aimed at late high school or first year university? Here, presented clearly and simply, would be all the relevant facts about how digestion works, how blood pH is regulated, what minerals are essential and what they really do, and so on.

It could be interesting, and it would give you a very clear idea of how nonsensical some of the "health" websites really are.

You would find out that stomach pH has no connection with blood or cell pH. The stomach is kept at pH1-2 to start the digestion of food, and is an isolated system. Any change that did happen in the stomach pH would have zero effect on the pH of the rest of the body. Blood pH is regulated by a completely separate series of chemical reactions.

These facts alone should warn you that websites recommending you monitor the acidity of your drinks for health reasons are based on nothing but ignorance and/or a desire to deceive.

There is a lot of denial. Keep saying the mantra. PH doesn't matter, PH doesn't matter.

I guess the lab coats are saying if you wait enough hours or days then all the build up of acid is removed but in the real world of sports performance coaches and athletes know otherwise.

The info is out there for people who are interested in higher performance.

you have believers & non believers

if ph does not matter one bit, than all should eat the crappy processed foods & no need for vegetables, minerals, vitamins

MD doctors get 1 hour in their years of training, about NUTRICIAN

so they are good in helping you with acute situation (broken leg, heart attack, bullet wounds....) but they ignore totally the importance of a good healthy diet

they are brainwashed anyway to prescribe PILLS that brings them / hospital a lot of money and make you hooked on their pills for life...

true / not true ???

many people suffer from GERD (acid flowing back the esophagus) ... doctors prescribe you with PPI or H2, which stops the acid production in the stomac ...

less PH in the stomac = makes you vulnerable for all kind of deseases the stomac acid normally kills

something like half a spoon of baking soda in a glass is a good short time remedy without any side effects, not like those pills that kill your stomac acid production

in many cases, people don't have too much stomac acid, but NOT ENOUGH !!!

if you are on PPI or H2, and you DARE to stop, you will have the worse acid attack of your life, when your stomac tries to catch up with the acid production

1. Makes no sense at all. A healthy diet is necessary for good nutrition. The need for micronutrients contained in fruits and vegetables etc has nothing remotely to do with pH.

2. Not true for most people, in my eperience. I have had to take PPIs on several occasions to treat h. pylorii. No problem at all after stopping, and most other peopke in my experience likewise have no problem. The stomach does not try to "catch up", it simply reverts to its normal pH. Of course if the medication was taken for GERD and the underlying causes remain, then all it will have done is made the reflux less irritating to the esophagus and pharynx and as soon as the medication is stopped, the irritation will resume. If on the other hand it was taken to heal a gastric irritation, and healing has occurred, should be fine to go off it.

Doctors also don't know much about biochemical things in the body. But you can't let them study 20 years and than get 20 years experience, because they would be in retire age before they are fully educated.

Read old books, a lot gems in there for living in the tropic areas (with bad hygienic conditions that times).

Drink a whiskey or strong espresso before and after eating. It makes the stomach more acid, for some people unpleasant. But better kills the bacteria.

Spicy: the same.

Don't drink beer to the food, as it increase the ph.

(if your stomach hurts a bit or you get GERD.....no problem in compare to dieing from an infection).

There is a tropic scheme for coal tablets on infections. If you use them early enough the results are better than antibiotics at a later time (you won't eat antibiotics for a small problem....you wait till the problem gets big, but you can eat coal tablets without much thinking and side effects). It is just an enormous amount of coal tablets. Can't recall exactly: 20 first and than 10 every 30 min. And lots of waters, no food.

If you sh*t enough and take it early you are cleaned out in a few hours.

Profit for the pharma: zero

Coal tablets are super cheap, and theoretically you could even make them yourself.

Soda Loading. Common knowledge in Horse Training and Racing since 1989.

http://www.equiforce.com/bicarbonate-loading-in-horses.aspx

interesting quote.

"Introducing bicarbonate into the system does not change the pH of the muscle cell, only the blood. The exact metabolic pathway that enables bicarbonate to work so well remains elusive, but it is theorized that, as blood pH increases during intense exercise, acidity leaves the muscle via a concentration gradient, allowing the energy-generating pathways to continue functioning efficiently. Influence of an alkalizing supplement on markers of endurance performance using a double-blind placebo-controlled design

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3359189/

That article reads like an advertisement for Alka-Myte®-based alkalizing tablets.

It appears in a "pay to be published", Internet-only journal.

The Competing Interests section shows how impartial the researchers were

"The authors acknowledge that the article-processing charge for this manuscript was paid by Rocktape (Los Gatos, CA USA). In addition, the tablets used for both treatment and placebo groups were provided without charge by TAMER Laboratories, Inc. (Shorline, WA USA)."

From a scientific viewpoint its credibility is pretty much zero.
