Thai trafficking alleged

Thai authorities have found five Cambodians employed illegally at a clothing store in Phuket after they were allegedly sold into slave-like conditions by a human-trafficking network, according to Thai media.

Police were tipped off by a relative of one of the Cambodians allegedly sold into servitude at Lai Sua Phuket Town shop after one of the women contacted family members in Cambodia in a desperate bid for freedom, the Phuket Gazette reported. All five reportedly earned less than 90 baht a day [less than $3].

Pasita Sangsakul, the owner of the shop, is quoted as saying she paid an agency 8,000 baht per person [about $250] for the four women and one man’s services.

Chiv Phally, deputy director of the Interior Ministry’s Anti-Human Trafficking and Juvenile Protection Department, said he had no details about the case.
