BANGKOK: -- Actor-turned-red shirt supporter Methee Amornwuthikul was on Monday sentenced by the Criminal Court a one year and four months suspended jail sentence and a fine of 66,666 baht for defaming redshirt leader Jatuporn Prompan.

Mr Methee is a supporter of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD).

UDD leader Jatuporn filed defamation case against Mr Methee for giving press interview accusing him of embezzling 68 million baht from donations made by the red-shirts to the UDD, for improper conduct with a woman while on a beach and threatening to kill him.

Six other defendants were also named as Naew Na newspaper, Chokchai Sumon, former Democrat MP Vachara Phetthong, NS TNews Co, ASTV Manager Co and Manager daily editor Tul Sirikulpipat.

However in the ruling today, the court said that Mr Methee had no solid evidence to confirm the donation embezzlement or the other accusations made against the UDD leader Jatuporn.

It then sentenced the former actor to two years imprisonment and a fine of 100,000 baht.

However the court said that since he gave useful information and cooperated well during the trial, the imprisonment sentence would be commuted by one-third to one year and four months, and suspended for two years, and the fine to 66,666 baht.

He was also ordered to publish the court’s verdict in two daily newspapers.

Charges against the other defendants, members and editors of the media, were dismissed as the court said they had acted honestly in publishing the interview with Mr Methee with no distortion of facts.

Is that even possible to defame Jatuporn ????? One of the most reprehensible members

of the UDD rogues gallery. Happy days when they are all swept aside....

....exactly my thoughts...!! Surely if you took away all that he is famed for, you would actually be raising his status in society...?!

I believe all this started when he was caught delivering weapons to a Red Shirt Rally during their "peaceful" protests in 2010, he was interrogated and allegedly Jatuporn called him to stop him from blabbing using a death threat.

Did I miss in the OP where it said that Jatuporn must pay back this 68 million baht that he embezzled? It's a mad old world when talking about some stealing scrote is worse than the thief thieving.

So where is the evidence then? Are you a detective? Do you know for sure that he embezzled the money?

I was wondering about that myself. We know he has embezzled huge amounts of money to buy things with and then declared them all as gifts. But where did he get that figure. Could have been higher.

Yes, it is when you have one of the silliest defamation laws on the planet, designed to protect cowardly pigs, who are mafia dons disguised as public servants.

Wow. I did not think any TVF members would have believed Jatuporns whole wheels fell off the lorry just outside my front door so I became wealthy beyond my wildest dreams as the lorry contained priceless artifacts and amulets.

You clearly do believe him. I, and any rational thinkers, find his whole story far fetched fantasy. Why did he make up such a silly story about how he became so rich, because the money was proceeds of dubious activity(to put it mildly).

For a character who professes or professed to support the common man and woman in their struggle for democracy the alleged ''rerouting'' of some 68,000,000 baht is indeed a somewhat strange move,

How long for the average person to earn that sort of money?

Improper conduct with a woman on a beach, well to my mind that is better than improper conduct by promoting violence at rallies.

Threatening to kill someone!

Well that was a normal part of the Red Shirt rhetoric along with extolling the virtues and delights of arson attacks too.

As said ''so good to see the feeding frenzy that the wounded Red Shirts delight in much like their marine counterparts ''sharks'' when one of their number is wounded.

You call your thinking rational, but it seems to have no basis in established fact.

Thailand thinks of itself as a civilised society. As such, people are considered innocent until evidence (rather than hearsay) proves them guilty of a crime.

The court has upheld the fact that no evidence was presented to uphold the serious accusations that were made against this guy. In any civilised society, there are legal sanctions in place to control baseless accusations that are intended to defame the reputation of any person. This seems to be what the court has concluded in its findings against Methee.

It would be unjust of us to say that Jatuporn in guilty unless evidence proves it.

The most amazing thing I have seen, heard, or read all day. Someone actually supporting Jatuporn.

But when they are proven guilty of a crime, you claim that the charges were politically motivated. If they are of the correct political persuasion, of course.
