Retirement dependant's passport expires before next extension due - needs an additional extension

This could be Jomtien related or Thailand wide, so I'll stick it in this forum for discussion. This is just a heads up for anyone who may be in a similar position.

My foreign wife's passport will expire 2 months before (May 2015) our next retirement extension is due in July 2015. We were told by the Jomtien immigration staff (at the retirement extension desk) that she will need an interim extension when she gets her new passport for a cost of 1900 baht to bring her up to the same date as mine. She needs to fill out a new TM7 and go through the usual retirement extension application process.

I didn't ask what will happen when my passport expires, but I get the feeling this only applies to dependants. I shall ask someone there tomorrow when I pick up our passports.

In the past if your passport expired before the one year of extension of stay did they would stamp your passport with permission to stay the the expiration date of uour passport and when you get your new passport you would go back in, transfer the stamps, and give you the balance of the one year -FREE!

That changed a few moths ago and your extension ends when the passport expires and you have to apply for a new one year extension with the new passport

In your wife's case it seem that they gave you the correct advice, When she gets her new passport she will have to apply for a new extension, which, in her case, is tied to your extension so she only gets two months for the 1900 baht and has to reapply again when you get your new extension.

The same rule (Aug. 2013) applies to all extensions of stay. If your passport validity is shorter than what your extension would be for you will only get an extension up to the date it expires. Then when you get a new passport they will transfer your stamps to it and then when your shortened extension ends you will have to apply for a new one.

Thanks for the clarification. So for me, the primary retirement extension holder, when my passport expires that date will become my new yearly date?

My passport expires in November and my retirement extension at the end of July. Does this mean I will need to do the full application process again in November of that year including producing a new income letter from my consulate?

If this is the case, the best option would be to apply for a new passport a few weeks before my retirement extension expires.

You would need everything to get the new extension that is required for any extension.

It would be best to get a new passport before applying for your extension.
