while the army is here and maybe Mayor Ma-Ann is listing to complaints can we kindly STOP ALL LETTING OF FIREWORKS OFF AT SURIN BEACH...

if you reside or are still living in the Surin Beach area you will understand the annoying letting off of fireworks during all hours of the evening

at the beach. these can go on all through the night when in the high season... big loud bangs while trying to sleep, let alone how they

scare all our animals during the evening.....

PLEASE DO SOMETHING NOW AND INVOKE A LAW STOPPING THE LETTING OFF OF FIREWORKS AT ALL BEACHES....

Fireworks in Australia are banned except for special displays put on using licenced explosive experts.

fortunately in Australia they are banned, unless it is for a festive reason and then a permit is issued....

have you seen how these idiots let them off at Surin Beach and i am sure at other beaches also...

i was there once when the water coming in. i.e. small surf to you.

and it knocked over a box of fireworks which then missiled into people sitting having dinner and a restaurant area... SAFE right....

Hi Steve,

yes i understand but the vendors still go ahead and let them off..... i know Catch Club had a sign up that stated no fireworks to be let off on their section of the beach

but the vendors just moved down the beach a little and do it there... i doubt anyone gets prosecuted .....

Cops aren't going to be chasing those letting off fireworks, but OP could always stay at the beach and ask nicely to those using fireworks. It might work..............

If you can not make it stop, then you could try desenzitation to the fireworks. One night at the town during the vegetarian festival should do the trick. After that, even huge fireworks feels like drops in the ocean.

Business owners in Patong had the Tesseban post "No Fireworks" signs along the beach. Patong police confiscate fireworks and lanterns along the beach regularly, but typically don't cite the sellers or users.

What you need to do is make a complaint at both your local tesseban office and police. There is a small contingent of foreign police volunteers in Surin that can help. I can put you in touch with them if you wish. Send me a PM.

Would the idea behind those complaints be because customers were leaving their bars to go down to the beach and watch the fireworks?

No.

Two days ago an older woman staying at Patong Towers had a panic attack after someone let off one of the big 6 inches nearby. She thought they had been bombed. It was so bad hotel staff called for an ambulance.

Well, I remember a while ago I was in Pattaya visiting friends, and we were in a bar on a Soi, just up from Beach Road. A big fireworks display started. It was quite spectacular. The fireworks were being detonated from pontoons in the bay.

A lot of people in the bars on that Soi paid their bill and took their beer down to Beach Road and watched the display, myself and my friends included. Even bar girls went down to watch. I had a quick look around and noticed many from nearby Soi were doing the same.

Now standing in amongst a big crowd of people, we eventually wandered off and just ordered drinks in another bar. Had there been no fireworks, we would have remained at the original bar and they would have made more money.

Of course, other customers may have attended the bar we had left, but maybe not.

The fireworks display continued for quite a while.

I have a feeling that a regular fireworks display on Patong Beach would see a lot of newbie tourists rush out of bars on Bangla Road and head down to the beach for the fireworks display, just as I saw in Pattaya.

Some may even rent a beach chair, and buy beer from the beach vendors, and watch the whole display.

Sorry NJ, I can't believe all the "business owners" in Patong complained, due to safety. I'm sure it was because it was effecting their business.

Those in charge of Surin Beach may be trying to make it a tourist attraction, so tourist will plan to go there for sunset, and then stay to watch the fireworks display, all over dinner and drinks.

I'm sure an organised, and professional fireworks display, would be popular with families, as one activity they must see, whilst on their holiday.

Ah ok, I see where you are confused now. The OP is talking about private sellers selling illegal fireworks to tourists who are setting them off at all hours, not permitted shows put on by professional pyrotechnicians for a short period of time at a reasonable hour.

Sorry NJ, I can't believe all the "business owners" in Patong complained, due to safety. I'm sure it was because it was effecting their business.

I did not say all nor did it say it was for safety. The main reason is because it's impossible to hold a conversation let alone sleep anywhere near the beach when these things are constantly going off. They also pollute the ocean and injure tourists. Last New Years I saw one explode on the sand at Kata Beach in the middle of a group of people.

planned fireworks displays i have no issue with, its the vendors selling to tourists in the bars/restuarants to purchase and be let off all hours of the nite that

is annoying.. and dangerous to those nearby... even lighting the paper laterns that drift into the sky are an issue and dangerous, we saw 2 sail into a tree above

and outdoor restaurant area and proceed to burn up and drop ash and melting wax down onto people....

i presume Falkan that most nice beach side places are tourist ghettos as you like to call them.... i have been living here for almost 8 years in Surin and yes

i have seen the good, the bad, the ugly, the recent clean up of surin beach to be made an example is excellent, getting rid of the beach chairs and umbrellas

fantastic.... having the public car park back is yet another excellent move ..... clearing the main road from surin beach past twin palms upto the old chedi hotel

now called The Surin and removing all the dead trees ... keep it going.... is another good move....

Also in Khao Lak lots of firework every high season, but fortunately rarely after about 11 PM. Always hotels/bars putting on shows to entice customers to stay there/go there and spend money. Myself I stopped buying firework for New Years Eve, had 2 "made in China" accidents, don't wanna push my luck.

What bothers me a lot more though, are the paper lanterns. Apart from the fire hazard, they end up in the sea, and parts of them are eaten by fishes that subsequently die. Usually don't belong to the crowd that wants to ban just about everything, but these things should be prohibited IMO, they already are in most/all counties in Western Europe.

If they were doing it before I arrived, I have no right to gripe about it once I've made the decision to stay.

Reminds me of the people who move in next to a stable that's been there for 100 years, then file complaints about the stench of horse poop. Or move under an airport flight path, then file complaints about the noise of the planes.

Dangerous? Possibly. Illegal? Maybe. Obnoxious? Probably. But, just like getting doused with filthy water at Songkran- I could have moved elsewhere. I didn't. My choice, my bad.

Haven't been there recently, but I know it from other places. I responded because of the annoying comment "... go home..." People should refrain from posting if they don't have to say anything. Enjoy Thailand and don't give up to care for your surroundings.
