Who knows a good, honest dentist in Pattaya ?

When you roam around Pattaya, you see 'dental clinics' all over the place, almost as numerous as 7/11 minimarts.

If you need to do implants or any dental prosthesis, you have a choice between so many places it's almost a headache. They are much cheaper than in the West and the quality, as far as I know, is fine in most of these clinics.

Now... when it comes to dental treatment, it's a whole different story. I'm sure all the dentists here know how to treat a cavity and what to do when faced with any kind of dental infection. But from what I've heard and experienced, their reading of medical ethics is somewhat ... how shall I put it nicely ... shaky. I am not saying that all Pattaya dentists are dishonest, but the records are not impeccable, to say the least.

Just my latest experience, for the record : last year I felt some pain in the upper jaw, so I went to a dentist who has already done 2 implants and 2 crowns for me. He made an X-ray and told me I needed root canal treatment on 3 teeth. Each treatment cost something like 8000 if my memory is correct. Well, as you probably all know, root canal treatment means you actually kill the tooth, so it's pretty serious and it's not something you want to do unless you're 100% sure that it's indispensable. I decided to take some antibiotics and postpone because I was due to go to Europe one month later. I planned to get some advice there too and see if they came up with the same conclusion. I went to a lab that has the latest technology for XRay imaging and to cut a long story short, the head Professor of the lab told me : no infection whatsoever, no need for root canal treatment. Argh....

The lab in Europe had no interest in lying to me, because they're just a lab, not a dental clinic. The dentist in Pattaya, on the other hand, used his professional status to try and lure me into spending 24 000 baht and 'killing' 3 of my teeth in the process. Was he mistaken or downright dishonest ? I don't know because needless to say, I never set foot in that place again.

So... my question is : does anyone here know a dentist who is not likely to perform a similar trick/mistake ? I'm feeling some pain in another part of my jaw right now, it's painful and obviously I need to consult soon. All positive and sound advice/opinion are most welcome.

For those who just want to take this opportunity to pounce viciously on Thai ways once more and tell me that everyone in this country is a crook etc. please save your time and keyboards. I'm asking for advice, not sarcasm, not lecturing, not rantings. I live here, I like it here, I know it's not a perfect place, but then neither is any other country I've been to, including the one where I was born. Thanks everybody !

Not sure where you have been before, but the Dentist we use is on the hill between Pattaya and Jomtien. Thrappaya Hill on the left hand side coming up the hill from Pattaya to Jomtien. It is maybe 2 x sois before you reach the ABC Language School. The main actors are German and they have their own Prostesis Lab on site. Their set up seems very professional and better than my Dentist in UK. When you walk in to the place it gives you a sense of " they know their industry in here. "

From the beach on South Pattaya Road, cross 2nd Road and about 40 meters on your left is a good honest dentist.

He is not one of those that just have multiple shop fronts to trap tourists. I think he only works Monday to Friday.

OK I copied the link and found it. Thanks a lot Rhodie. Funny how many dental places are called 'Smile'.... I understand why of course, although when you're on the dentist's chair, smiling is the last thing you do, usually biggrin.png

Yep, I've seen the place many times. I think they actually advertize the fact that they're German (which is kind of funny, but I can see why they do it). From what you say they must be really good for prosthesis, but my question was about simple dental treatment, you know, purely medical stuff not prosthesis. Since you obviously tried the place, did you ever get treatment only in there, or was there always prosthesis involved (which of course includes a measure of treatment as well) ?

Yes we have had routine treatments there as well. We spent a lot of money with them - but equally happy with the service and treatments. If you go there, ask to speak with the " boss " and then you will understand what I mean.

I think the point is that antibiotics may cure it indefinitely, temporarily, or not at all. Root canal work should be effective regardless. So what you should do is try the tablets and see what happens, and then you can do the root canal if the tablets dont work, or if the infection returns. This is what was done to me several times in Europe and in some instances we had to do the root canal in the end and in other cases not.

Maybe the dentist here thought you were transitory or in too much of  a hurry to try this, and just wanted a permanent solution fast. Or maybe he was indeed just trying it on. We shall probably never know for sure.

Anyone can do fillings and suchlike but for implants I would only have these done by a specialised implantologist who does nothing else, like the one who did mine. I certainly would not have them done by these small clinics that also advertise discount laser whitening or whatever it is. Two Pattaya clinics told me that implants were not possible for my two missing teeth, but a specialised Thai implantologist did both with no trouble at all.
