Junta chief to push for 2% growth

7-5-2014-4-13-06-PM-wpcf_728x413.jpg

BANGKOK: -- National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) chairman Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha announced to stimulate economy from the grass root with growth target this year of 2% or higher.

In his weekly Friday night TV program “Return Happiness to the People”, Gen Prayuth vowed to strive for a GDP growth of 2% or higher against the central bank’s target of 1.5%.

He said the focus would be placed on economic stimulus packages, especially those designed to assist at grass root level or low-income earners.

He said financial institutions would be encouraged to help promote investment by offering soft loans while the NCPO would try to keep the baht from appreciating for the benefit of the Thai export sector.

In regard to the disbursement of the 2014 budget, Gen Prayuth revealed that more than 50 billion baht in the coffers had not been used, saying he would speed up the allocation process.

The remaining budget might be transferred to the water management and flood prevention project, which was considered an urgent agenda, he added.

I am sure the TAT can do the figures for him so all can be happy with Dear Leader's genius economic management skills coffee1.gif

I also assume that the 2% number was pulled out of someones a$$ and not based on economic modelling

This basically is an announcement, that additional "First-Time-Buyers-Schemes" are in the pipeline.

Must be, otherwise he would have said: "We will finally make decisive efforts to increase productivity to achieve this goal".

But he didn't say that and I know d*mm well, why he didn't say that !

Cheers.

hmmmm that sounds awfully familiar laugh.png

The populism of Thaskin is back with a vengeance, only this time with zero checks and balances, and zero accountability.

Nevermind, happiness is being returned to the people and the military dictatorship for Burma has given their blessing thumbsup.gif

With this time the grass roots and low-incoming / no-income level being really helped.

BTW your suggestion that ThaiksinYinglucks populism had cheques and balances seems to ignore some of those scams. The RPPS comes to mind. It seems still unclear whether the final deficit will only be 700++ billion or 'slightly' more.

The 2014/2015 National Budget at 2.56 trillion seems not much duifferent from what the Yingluck administration was thinking of. Well, of course some items from the "infrastructure dream" are put back in the National Budget. The deficit of 250 billion is also like the possibly 200 billion for the current 2.5 trillion NB.

Of course the Yingluck administration didn't have the rice price pledging scheme in the National Budget rolleyes.gif

Great how the negative bunch leap in on everything, in this instance they don't seem to think the economy should be given a boost.

I see we now suddenly have 50 billion that hasn't been spent from the 2014 budget, could it be that it wasn't supposed to be spent but just disappear ?

Now under new management that would not be possible.

And where was that spare 50 billion when the farmers were in need of payment ?

Don't forget Rubi that there was going to be 2.2 trillion for infrastructure and 350 billion for flood relief, both amounts off budget, that had to be to be added to the proposed Yingluk, PT budget.

Flood relief and the first year of the infrastructure work are both included in the proposed 2014/2015 budget.

For those who don't appear to understand, the country has an income from tax among other things, this is estimated to cover all but 250 billion of the proposed budget.

However if corruption which was estimated to cost the country between 25 and 40% can be brought under control (a good start has been made in just over a month) and a fair bit can be clawed back from those who are caught (about 500 million so far) then there is a good chance that deficit can be reduced.

Can Thailand not learn from the West? Economic stimulus by the government doesn't work.

In the Great Depression of the 1930's one would think that all of the governments' spending on war would have stimulated the economy. There were no domestic cars built in the US from 1943 until 1946. All of the auto manufacturers turned to building jeeps and tanks and even airplanes. Men went to war and the women went into the factories. There was government spending on guns, bullets, aircraft carriers and other ships, and on and on.

And yet the Depression didn't really end until after the war when the soldiers returned and went to work and started paying taxes and spending money in the private sector.

Only the private sector can create wealth. The government is always a net consumer of wealth. When stimulus becomes a religion, the government goes deep into debt in a failed attempt to stimulate.

The way for Thailand to stimulate is to relax regulations for starting and running a business, and to stop confiscatory taxes on the producers. High taxes discourage investment.

More than 5 years and countless $trillions of stimulus, the world is still in a recession, and just deeper in debt. Get it right side up again - free small and large business to thrive and create jobs and pay taxes to support the government and watch the economy go.

yes but they didn`t coincide their wreckless public spending with military parties to bring happiness to the people.

I trust the general whole heartedly and wish he could father my babies. I feel so happy about everything I dont even want to criticize the junta or hold anyone to acccount. wub.png

Id like for you to work out exactly howuch smaller the USA economy would be today if there hadn't been any stimulus?

A true word, the National Budget has nothing to do with corruption. Mind you as the budget is based on income/expenses and with corruption leading to losses, no corruption may lead to more items to be included in the National Budget without either raising the total amount or even the expected deficit. Who knows the deficit could be even zero.

Now to assume that if the official growth of the GBP over 2015 is on or above the 2% target, some interesting accounting has been done (the scientific approach of wishful thinking for instance) is like like applying that approach yourself in preparing an explanation of such growth without needing economical figures of six months still to come.

------------------------

Printing money does NOT insure growth .... in fact quite often it's exactly the opposite.

More money available can, in fact, create inflation and not growth by putting excess money into the system while the supply of available goods to buy remains limited.

This is due to the law of supply and demand when the demand (and funds to buy) grows without a corresponding growth in available supply. Therefore prices rise..... the same goods cost more.... and inflation results.

What they are referring to is policies that will promote growth by lowering the costs of business to borrow funds for expansion/growth by creating jobs and profits in the economy.

That, however, is no given ask the U.S Fed or the U.K. banks who are trying to spur growth by lending rates with negative interest borrowing rates for loans.

New money injected into the economy to spur growth is a fine idea if it is used wisely.

The devil in that is the term used "wisely".

Wisely isn't always the case, especially in Thailand.

Keep wishful thinking rubi is exactly what it is, real 0 % corruption is unheard of anywhere in the world facepalm.gifand its Thailand your talking about, get real.

As for creative accounting it is not a scientific approach its just cooking the books as we all know, ive no doubt thats exactly what is more likely and is about as real or honest as 0% corruption will ever be here...

Keep spinning, your pretty poor at it still but getting better.

What is more likely is they will just print money and try to pump things up like other countries and then watch inflation rise. As another poster already pointed out the only place that creates real income for any government is the private sector by taxes not the public sector or a stimulus package.

Go back to school and learn how the war preparations brought Germany out of the crises and than next UK and than the USA.

After the war the massive rebuild by the governments brought a 20 year long boom.

It works, but only if it is done smart. A stimulus only for consumption is of course stupid.

Good example:

If you build a power plant....you have employment, labor can spend more. When it is finished it makes profit and pays for itself and the electric will be cheaper so private companies can produce cheaper and are internationally more competitive.

Bad example:

handing out money for consumption that goes mainly into foreign produced goods. (Like Thaksins credit for mobile phones, knowing that most of the credits won't be paid back). Money gone away. State debts increased, long term profit zero (well some people have a profit, Thaksin was the owner of AIS).

I'm not saying there will be no corruption. In a land where normal people condone corruption the NCPO would need a few decades to cause a shift in mindset. Nether they (i.e. NCPO) nor the THai people would want that (it seemsrolleyes.gif )

As for 'creative accounting' my somewhat tongue-in-cheeky description may have caused misunderstanding. My excuses if it did wai.gif.

Now as for printing money, that remains to be seen. Till now no indication they will start a 500 billion Baht non-revolving funds, or want to borrow 2.2 trillion now to be spent over a few years, or just claim to need 350 billion to play with water. Till now no indication at all.

BTW by eliminating or even greatly reducing corruption and 'tea money' the private sector will be greatly stimulated, even more so than be reducing taxes. Allegedly that is wink.png

PS where do I spin, if even only poorly?

State debts increased, long term profit zero (well some people have a profit, Thaksin was the owner of AIS).

Maybe you should go back to school and delve deeper into the reasons of those booms.

The vigorous economic growth of the late 1940s and 1950s is touted as evidence for the blessings of big government spending its both spin and Its false.Take unemployment. Unemployment of course was historically high throughout the 1930s, and the rate plummeted once the U.S. government entered the war. But this was no sign of returning prosperity. The government drafted 10 million men into the armed forces and others enlisted to avoid conscription. Those men were not producing prosperity by making consumer goods. They were fighting a war. Moreover, statistics showing that industrial production picked up steam in the 1940s are no indication of prosperity because those plants weren't making consumer goods; they were making war materiel.

Yes, national output as conventionally measured did grow hugely during the war... Gross domestic product increased by 84 percent between 1940 and 1944. What the orthodox account neglects, however, is that this "miracle of production" consisted entirely (and then some) of increased government spending, nearly all of it for war materials and equipment and military personnel. The private component of GDP (consumption plus investment) actually fell after 1941, and while the war lasted, private output never recovered to its pre-Pearl Harbor level. In 1943, real private GDP was 14 percent lower than it had been in 1941. If a nation produces an abundance of guns and ammunition, it does not thereby achieve genuine prosperity.

Those who lived through the war ... forget the scarcity of decent housing, the hassles in commuting to work, and the severe rationing or complete absence of basic consumer goods...

Because of the many other ways that the well-being of consumers deteriorated during the war, which the official data fail to capture, actual wartime conditions were even worse than the figures suggest .Of course there was a boom after but only due to the horrors of war and destruction not smart economics and it took decades to catch up again which is what the booms were all about.

Same with Germany and same with the UK and Japan they had to redirect funding into domestic rebuilding and repair then later consumerism whilst the US went right to consumer purchase. The USA also had reparations and repayment loans coming in from all which helped a lot in later years.

Of course technology would have been on the slow burn if no war and ergo less boom too but thats another story.

Stimulus based on war and death is not smart in my book even if it works, the US still uses that model today because it works for them and has no other means.since exporting all its manufacturing abroad the only thing left is the petro dollar and its military industrial complex still to protect it.

Mind you, I do agree with you that it's a bit early to see if we're moving in the right direction. On the other hand for now things look better than under some previous governments.

You don`t like a frank conversation about the facts, you like to cheer lead "your" team and actually admitted to trolling on another thread. Furthermore you cant have a frank conversation when 90% of anything that differs to your view is deleted.

I`m sorry, but until you and your half dozen partners in crime at least get some understanding on recent events the condescending tone will continue. I`ve some great links to help you if you are interested, some you can even view in Thailand thumbsup.gif

Finally, Id just like to say happiness is being returned to the people and publicly thank the general for freeing us from the tyrant in Dubai. He knows whats best for us so limiting speech makes sense as we all agree anyway. The backing of powerhouses like Burma proves this is the right way forward.

By suggesting some kind of dissolving of the majority of the Thai electorate you have demonstrated just how in depth you knowledge is of the current situation and I doth my cap to you sir. You deserve all the happiness the great general is bestowing upon us.

After reading many, many opinions on the subject of the military coup I have come to a conclusion - that the only ones who the military is not "returning happiness to" don't deserve it anyway, are probably pseudo PTP/red supporters and would not be missed if they all evaporated tomorrow.

Ah, it seems you have decided to use your amazing powers for Good, and not Evil.

Thank you for your kind words. (but easy on the "Go team yellow" stuff, that is going a bit far.) clap2.gif

Oh please, not that condescending, please. I can't speak for Robbie but personally I like a frank discussion with truth, facts and ideas based on more than wishful thinking, or the need to fully agree with someone.

I like a frank discussion on facts, not just 'what all know or should know'. As for '90% of anything is deleted', may that be due to the nature of your posts rather than my views? Please note I'm not a moderator and neither do I aspire to become one because I'd have to stop posting in this particular forum to avoid a 'conflict of interest',

Please provide a link to the post where I "admitted to trolling".

As for links on understanding recent events, please PM if you feel you can't include in replies here.

Finally may I express to be puzzled by your last sentence. At times you seem so utterly pro-NCPO, so unthinking that it gets difficult to comprehend?
