Divers search for the body of Matubhum Party deputy secretary-general Pan Peungsujarit, who reportedly jumped from the Rama IX Bridge into Chao Phraya River on Friday evening.

BANGKOK: -- Search continued yesterday for the body of Matubhum Party deputy secretary-general Pan Peungsujarit, who reportedly jumped from the Rama IX Bridge into Chao Phraya River on Friday evening.

Police yesterday enlisted rescue workers and police to dive into the river in a two-kilometre radius from where the politician is presumed to have jumped. The search was reportedly facing difficulties due to strong currents.

Bang Kho Laem superintendent Sombat Kaenwichit said CCTV footage showed a man, believed to be the 68-year-old politician, drive a Volvo to the bridge, walk towards the railing and jump into the river without any hesitation. The whole incident happened in 15 seconds, he added. Police inquiries with Pan's relatives and witnesses still could not find a motive for the suicide.

Meanwhile, Pan's youngest son Wanchalerm Peungsujarit said he didn't believe his father would commit suicide, as he was always in a good mood and did not suffer from depression or stress. There was only one problem with his health - Pan suffered from dizziness occasionally because of an ear block since 2007, so he had to take supplements and vitamins, according to the son, who added he didn't believe that was sufficient enough reason to lead to the suicide.

Wanchalerm said he and two other siblings had moved out and Pan stayed with his wife while the three children visited them every week. On Friday, Pan was home alone and drove off without anyone knowing where he was heading, he said, adding the family still hoped Pan was safe.

Maybe his past was catching up with him, I mean.... he was a politician after all.

That thought crossed my mind ,.

Nice to see the TV vulture squad is on hand to pick at a body before a single fact is known.

I could be cynical now and suppose that this was perhaps the only decent thing this politician has done in his entire career. But I won't.

And we could suppose that you are a complete..... I could say it but I'd be banned.

"Police yesterday enlisted rescue workers and police to dive into the river in a two-kilometre radius from where the politician is presumed to have jumped."

Radius? So do they think he managed to float or swim upstream?

"one problem with his health - Pan suffered from dizziness occasionally because of an ear block since 2007, so he had to take supplements and vitamins"

That dizziness may have been a symptom of more than an "ear block" (whatever that is supposed to mean). "supplements and vitamins" have no effect on ear or eye health. An acoustic neuroma or brain tumor would not be out of the question.

Regardless, best regards to family in this time of tragedy.

And maybe it wasn't. Maybe it was just a consequence of his being an elderly man.

68 is elderly? Really? 68 is early middle age. 95 is elderly.

So with middle being the centre and early being on the "before middle" side then if 68 is early middle age you are suggesting people live to over 150 years of age?

68 is old. Though if I was 68 I would say early middle age too to make myself feel younger!

RIP to the old man and condolences to the family.

Sorry to hear about this sad story, hope not to read too many callous comments on the matter. For some of us suicide is a touchy subject, and unfortunately the list is ever growing.

As far as being middle aged or not in your sixties, when I was in my thirties I thought people in their sixties were ancient relics.

Now I am 57 and find myself planning my life years ahead.

Mind you I used to have the body of a Greek God, now I look like a God damned Greek. whistling.gif

I have to chuckle at all these comments about age! Everyone has to grow old - there are no longer any "Peter Pans" in this world, so those youngsters on here who constantly decry old age had better prepare themselves for the worst! I'm 80, feel like 40 and still ride my 1500cc mo'cycle!

When I go to work in Australia, in Gunnedah NSW, I occasionally work with this truck driver who is 85 years old, a truly remarkable man. Someone told me he is the oldest truck driver in Australia, and I can believe it.

He was telling about when he retired at 65, it lasted 2 weeks and this trucking company offered him a weeks work and he has been there now for 20 years, after retiring !
